As I recall Earth was nuked, literally, and both sides were basically duking it out in space with the resources they could muster from their respective colonies.

Like I said, Kinetic Energy Weapons.
That's almost certainly why, in the extended trailer that is Disco canon (as per Igiss), you see the ships leaving from out in space and nowhere near Earth orbit.

Everything from 2160 to 2162 and a few prior events can probably be figured out from StarLancer. The prior events I'm referring to are the Lunar Conflict, Europa Conflict, etc. These events were mentioned several times in the campaign by the game manual, NPCs, and in-game databases.
The way I interpret it, some time prior to 2160, the Coalition began getting into territorial disputes with the Alliance over its colonies. These disputes led to the Lunar Conflict, Europa Conflict, etc., but wasn't quite enough to start a full-scale war. In 2160, the two sides decided to sign the Balma Treaty to end the disputes, but the Coalition launched a surprise attacks and began the War of Sol.
Also, according to the Freelancer intro, the Coalition began its assault on the Alliance from Planet Venus. Therefore, after the events of StarLancer, I think it can be safe to assume that the Alliance somehow pushed the Coalition all the way back to Planet Venus before the Coalition gained a massive upperhand and wiped out the Alliance.
