He watched the traffic pouring in and out of the space port. It was as if the momentum of one landing pushed another out, and he toyed with this idea for a moment. Then he discarded of it like his former life. The man who lived on Manhattan with his parents in a tiny flat within the Central Business District of the region. The single massive city covered most of the once-lush planet, so there was a CBD for each region. Living in this bustling business centre had its advantages, and disadvantages. But mostly the latter. There was a large community of people to socialise with.
That was the only advantage he could think of. He hated living in the CBD. It was crowded. Most people weren't his age anyway, because the schools were in the inner suburbs. So he supposed the one advantage hadn't really been real, because he still had to travel to socialise. The people of the CBD were just businessmen going about their varying work, so it wasn't really a community. More like an uncomfortable embrace.
There was the traffic in the skies. He hadn't even tried buying a ship, instead relying on a bike. Easier and cheaper. The noise. In their minuscule flat, there was rarely a quiet moment. And in the rare instance there was, the sudden silence was deafening for the boy who had grown up with the spaceships constant noise accompanying him like an overprotective parent. There were so few flats in the CBD, he didn't even know why they had lived there. He had never bothered to ask.
It was too late for questions now. With his bank account emptied of the three thousand and something credits stored away over his life by his parents, and a note left on his bed explaining why he had to leave, he had close to ran toward the space port. They had wanted him to go into some office job for the duration of his life. But that wasn't him. He was twenty-three and had at least a hundred years ahead of him. So he was going to get rich quickly, or die trying. He didn't want to live as a poor man.
His parents had been the proud owners of a successful business that served the entire area, even some parts of the neighbouring sections of the mega-city that was Manhattan. They had pampered him with luxuries, but had wanted him to go into the family business. He had expressed his lack of interest. They had ignored it. They didn't care what he wanted.
So he had had to leave. It was a shot at a better life or a ball and chain on the ankle for the duration. And the second was no option. So he had no choice but to leave. And he already had the answer to the question of a new life. A better life. Which could turn back on him in an instant. But he considered himself to be worthy of the honour. Worthy of the privilege. Worthy of following the dream.

Since the beginning of history for the human race, there has always been an interest in the stars and what lied beyond planet Earth. By the beginning of the twenty-first century A.D. humanity had a decent understanding of space, but going there was a luxury which few had the requirements or money to experience.
By the ninth-century A.S. the use of technology which could push people out with the stars was as common as the automobile of their twenty-first century ancestors. However, there were few reasons. Most of the few who worked on various space stations just chose to live in the station. So space was, for the common family, a rare tourist destination. But even then, just staying in their ships and observing the view before returning to their home via the docking ring. Remaining safe at all times within the sphere of protection offered by the planetary defences.
