I've played both SC1 and SC2, while SC2 has the awesome graphics, there's just something about SC1 that makes me want to play it over SC2... Maybe nostalgia or just the fact it was quite original and mind taking back then...

I have a little theory about it.
See, SC1 is tile based. SC2 is not. There's that something about tile-based games. They all have some special charm. So my little theory is that tile concept has attractive power by itself because tiles' structure reminds our unconsciouness about board games. Chess and such. It's a feeling of finiteness, completelness, form. Every tile has edges ("surface"), and symmetry. Like human body, and any animal's body alike for that matter: surface and symmetry.
There are many, many other things about SC1. Music, the way things are desgined, precise athmosphere of a little yet complete world. Fairness, of sorts... And exceptionally excellent ruleset, allowing experienced player to predict result of his choices OH so well. The "tile magic" is only one bit of many, it's just that i think it's one underestimated bit. Underestimated alot...
Do you see the groundhog there? No? Me neither. But, it's there nonetheless.
Nah, SC1 is much more serious thats the thing. Even though the graphics look a bit friendly-ish, the atmosphere is more "realistic and sad". SC 2 is a bit childish, more like a WoW crowd like approach, that is the downside.

SC2 does use tiles like SC1. Just more of them. You can see this when placing structures. The units are animated different which gives the illusion that there isn't.
