So this is my question: Can external hard drives (say those i buy at a computer store) be used with the Xbox 360 (i' thinking of grabbing one used and jury rigging an external drive to compensate for the lack of memory on the arcade).

I am sure there is a way. Though that usually results in you not being able to use Xbox Live without fear of your system being bricked. However there are USB ports on the 360 so it may or may not work. I however doubt it is possible without hacking the system. Why do I say that? MS sells hard drives for the 360 and MS is greedy! Easier to make money if you are the only one that sells things for a product no?
I have a 300GB in my old Xbox that I use to store movies and such. There are larger drives designed for the Xbox, though they do cost more than a standard HD of the same size.
Also, when referring to actual a hard drive, it isn't memory. It is storage. Memory is your RAM. Not that you care, just a pet pee from a nerd.

Well, Yes and no. The Max a Xbox 360 can support via USB is I think 16 GB. There is another way. The Hardrive that is suposed to be only used with the Xbox is actualy a Laptop Drive with a special Connector. Buy a friends old Drive, then google For a pre-Flashed SATA Drive for use in a Xbox. it should be cheaper than buying a new HDD from MicroSoft.
Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts... perhaps the fear of a loss of power.
I remember there was a way in which you could soldier a serial port directly into the 360s motherboard, to install any HD of your choice and run the games without cds:DThough it depends on if its using the old firmware, or the new firmware. D:
