Name: Simon Black Faction: Bounty Hunter Callsign: Bronze 3 Nickname: N/A Birhtplace: Omega 7, Freistadt base Current residence: Manchester system, Sheffeld station Race: Mixed Age: 21 Sex: Male Hair: Black Eyes: Hazel Height: 5'11 Degress: Basic flight and combat, Ulm Border Station Rheinland Millitia training program Traits: Exiled. Suspicious backround. Unique Bounty Hunter. Drawn to skies. Chivlarious. Homebody. Idealist. Backround: Simon Black was born in Omega 7 system, on Freistadt base to an IMG warehousman Kane Black and his wife, Anna Black who's an accounter for IMG.
Both of his parents are of Border Worlds origin, although his father is not a long time IMG employee. As one of many locals who were hired by Kruger Minerals, he used work in Elbich mining facility. Due to hard conditions for such imigrants he supported Red Hessians movement, but not for long. K.Black was taken to Omega 11 by the Red Hessians, however he did not stay there for long, as he soon realised that the methods of Hessians could not justify the goal, and called their actions, in his words, "tribute to branch of degenerated idealism". By the help of S.Black's older brother Mat Black, he managed to persuade Hessians to let him go peacefully and soon returned to Omega 7 to work for Independent Miners Guild.
Simon grew among the walls of Freistadt rarely coming outside out of station to space due to frequent, potentially dangerous Red Hessians and Corsairs activity in the system. Life in Omega 7 wasnt easy due to Rheilands imperialistic intentions, threatening political and financial cavity, while constant skirmishes between the two gangs - Corsairs and Hessians appeared to threaten security. Simon wanted to fly nontheless.
At the age of 17, Simon was recruited by the Rheiland goverment to police forces. Finishing militia training he graduated two years later at the age of 19.
Career in Rheiland's Police wasnt succesful for Simon. The official Police reports point at "Millitary and Police officers connections with pirate folk" and "Disobbeying orders of higher rank officers" code of conduct violations as reason of expelling Simon out of the Police.
It is rumored the reason of Simon's expelure is that Simon had a romance with Red Hessian pilot B.Olsen (it is not known whether such person exist, as there is no data regarding her) and during one of Police patroling missions he disobeyed shooting at Red Hessians craft. The Red Hessians and Rheiland Police would never bless such an union, therefore Simon was expelled from Police forces. Criminal organisations would not contact him due to his previous Police backround. His brother gone missing during the year of these happenings.
At this point Simon chose to exile himself into Bretonia, hoping to earn credits for himself and his family. Besides he spoke the local language.
The lawful forces wouldn't trust him due to his suspicious backround regarding the event and the criminals wouldnt accept him due to his backround and traits such as chivlary or idealism. The only place for such folk with suspicious backround was Bounty Hunters Guild, that Simon joined soon after meeting Bounty Hunter called Pancamo.
"Sheffeld station here..." - an emotionless voice answered Pancamos request to land. - "I read you... Put yourselves on the repaired area somewhere."
Simon was schocked by such a cold reply. He was used on warming welcomes, like the ones that he used to hear while serving in Federal Police. Pancamos voice interrupted his thoughts.
"I told you to stop with the day dreaming" - Pancamo sighed
"Sorry, I was just..."
"Land on the broken concrete" - Pancamo turned his head to the left after commanding reply, whispering himself -"This guy will kill both of us for sure"
They docked.
-Back on ground, inside Sheffeld-
Simon was taking off his helmet while approaching Pancamo, who was already sitting leaned back on the sidewalk, outside the elevators to launching pads, smoking a cigarette in a relaxed manner. There wasnt much traffic on this side of dock. No cargo lifters, few pilots walking across the lodging.
Simon took the helmet off, placing it under his arm. He was standing in front of his instructor, seeming lost.
"So..?"
Pancamo glanced up.
"So, what do I do now?" - Simon repeated the question.
Pancamo handed him a blaster. Simon took it, examining its shape.
"You got yourself a ship. What else do you want? This is not an academy for you" - Pancamo replied crossing his legs, taking another smoke into his lungs - "There wont be an inauguration"
Simon frowned in dissatisfaction.
"Alright, kid..." - Pancamo spoke up - "Sit down, I'll tell you whats what."
Simon sat nearby on the sidewalk. He put the blaster in his belt and placed his helmet in between of his legs, on ground. Pancamo looked up. He breathed out the smoke, watching cloud fading. A long pause followed. Simon couldnt bear the silence any longer. He was the first one to break it.
"This part of the station seems remote"
"You're damn right its remote" - Pancamo nodded - "The station is overfilled with Bounty Hunters, we dont have enough docks to land in, therefore we have to place ourselves here. If you're worrying about the ship though, dont bother. This area may be unsupported, but it isnt unsafe"
Thoughts about the ship clearly wasnt the ones, which made Simon somewhat worried.
"Why are there so many Bounty Hunters here?" - He asked.
"We're on the edge of nowhere. One more trade lane jump and you're crawling all the way to Independent worlds. "Independent"... ha"
"How does all of this add up then?"
"Well" - Pancamo shook off the substance from his cigarette - "Thats what being Bounty Hunter is all about. We get called to places where no one else wants to go. Threat to life, they say..."
He took a pause to catch breath. Looking at his cigarette, which was almost done.
"Once we settle in properly, they want to get rid off us. Finally we outnumber the millitia, who are supposed to "control" us and then... then they want us out for good... Bloody goverment..." - Pancamo was getting lost at his memories, but then he came to himself and continued - "Being a Bounty Hunter means being alone, unless you find some followers to work and drink with"
Simon looked surprised.
"But I thought that the Guild ties you together" - He wondered.
"Ha.. The guild... It does nothing, but find us contracts and take share of OUR profits."
Pancamo noticed that Simon was somewhat depressed listening to him. He patted Simon on back to cheer him up, then stood up to finish his speech.
"Tell you what, though. When you're in space..." - Pancamo turned around to face Simon, who was still sitting on the sidewalk and smiled to him - "...Then you have to count on your wingmen"
Pancamo dropped his cigarette on ground and started walking towards exit. Simon stood up rapidly and was about to ask something, but Pancamo raised his hand in the air and walked away, leaving Simon to his thoughts.
Pat 2: First Engagment. -Personal quarters, inside Sheffeld station-
Simon was sitting in his quarters, catching his breath. He had to sit down to have some time to re-think.
Everything was happening too quickly, need to slow the time down a bit. Two years ago.. Federal Police. Now - The Bounty Hunters Guild. And here I am... in Bounty Hunters gear, having some time off from recent escorts. There guys sure like to give you a hard time! Three escorts since joining. Last week - Tau's construction site, this week - Liberty space. Got back to Sheffeld today. Its hard to call the place home, though. I never stay here for long... And these quarters, I cant even call it a room...
He smiled. However, the smile soon faded away. Again he realized that he is stuck within these quarters, bound to come back here everytime for another exhausting job. These little jobs get him nowhere. He is stuck within the Guild. Didnt even get any contract, any order from it yet. Did they just got him in and forgot about it completely? Have to work his ass off, doing maintenance until he can pay back for the Manta, that the Guild bought him.
Five million credits in total! How am I supposed to collect that much with petty side-jobs?
A beeping has interrupted his thoughts. Simon stood up and walked to his computer. It was a small device. Simon entered an optical chip in it and soon hologram of keyboard and screen appeared. He checked the log. New message received.
-Incoming transmission-
From: Bounty Hunters guild. Sheffelds control
To: Bounty Hunters Bronze 3
Location: Sheffeld station, Manchester system
-Open transmission-
This is mission control. Submitting contract details.
Client: RepEx security
Target: UoG Mollys
Location: Dresden system
Bounty: 10 million credits
Details: When UoG are in Rheinland, or the Sigma's there is a standing 10 million credit bounty on them. Each and every one. This is until they learn to stay in their own systems. RepEx has enough to deal with without foreign pirates hunting our shipments.
-End of transmission-
Simon checked his log again to make sure. Yes, Bronze 3. Thats his new identification number.
Ten million credits!? I could get the debt for the Guild paid with that much! Simon suddenly felt a big opportunity - A bounty at last.
He smiled.
Lets see if this ship was worth it
-Above Sheffeld station-
Simon launched his ship to space. The outside, however, seemed to be ordinary and Simon started to doubt about the transmission, but soon he got contacted via private channel.
This is Bounty Hunters Bronze 1 to Bronze 3. Python speaking an unfamiliar, but lively voice spoke up.
This is Bronze 3. I read you. Simon dropped the official tone Whats going on?
Im sorry I couldnt meet you outside Sheffeld as planned. Good to have you with me, though. Where do we meet The guy asked.
Lets rendezvous in New Berlin system Simon answered the call.
Roger. Pythons out.
-Somewhere along the trade lane. Omega 7 system.-
Space was static as ever. Even the gas clouds seemed sleeping.
Simon checked his fuel tank. There wasnt much H-Fuel left in there. He was travelling quite a while now, took the longer way for Python to catch up.
Will have to make an unplanned landing then Simon checked his scanners and suddenly shouted out No way!
Freistadt was right in front of him. The place where he grew up. Nostalgic memories took over Simon once again. His parents lived here And his brother And The girl. And her smile
Simon landed his ship. He told an old dock worker to fill his ship up with fuel quickly. Simon knew this man from his early flying days, but now the worker did not recognize him. Simon looked different now. He is a Bounty Hunter.
The place was awfully familiar. His home. His real home. It has never been so far and so close at the same time. Simon could never force himself to come back and now when hes here, he doesnt even have enough time for a visit.
He decided to depart quickly.
-New Berlin system, Bradenburg space-
A ship came out of Bradenburg station
Here you are Simon nodded to Python
Ah, yes- Python seemed uncomfortable -Sorry for being late
Well. Lets do it
Yeah Python replied
They took a trade lane to Dresden jump gate and docked.
-Dresden system, outside the jump gate-
Lets take the trade lane? Python asked in an unconfident tone. He was clearly in a doubt.
Great Simon thought Another new guy like me. Thats all I could want for
Not even this decision would make them loose tactical advantage of surprise element, but also the trip would become prolonged. Simon realized that he has to do something fast or they arent going to make it.
Let me take the lead He humbly suggested.
Python suddenly smiled. Simon ignored that as it wasnt a good time for an analysis of his wingmate. Under orders of Simon they were already cruising further into the cloud.
I have two UoG on my scanners Simon announced and switched to public channel Mollys, you have wandered too far. Now you will advance no further
The Mollys were caught by a surprise and one of them fled instantly. However, the other Molly was already aiming for Simon. They passed by shooting at each other. The shield absorbed the damage relatively well and the ship was holding together. Mollys shields went down in the first passed.
Meanwhile Python was outflanking the enemy. He seemed a completely different man. Confident, concentrated. He launched a well timed attack from the rear while the Molly was turning. The hull was breached and the pirate tried to flee, but he made a mistake of fleeing in a straight line. Python activated his thruster to match targets trajectory and launched the final salve of plasma. Scanners showed clear. No boogies impound.
Simon seemed anxious to claim his reward:
Lets get out of here He said
Sure Python remained calm.
-Planet New Berlin-
Mantas hatch opened as Simon was climbing off the ship. He overheard his wingmate speaking with a RepEx representative who again thanked ...wing leader Python for his valuable service. Simon could not believe his ears. Python is a leader of a wing, just like Pancamo? Simon anxiously ran to Python, but Python beated to it and happened to speak first:
Aye it was good fun doing that job He said
Python! I didnt know you were so well adapted within the guild! Simon laughed. Python smiled and scratched his head:
Aye, I am He paused I was going to lead but I decided to keep quiet and see what you were like
Python blinked in satisfaction just as Simon smiled back at him.
So he was playing a fool all along. I wonder how long he would have pretended before hed have switched course to the asteroid field. Now I see why hes called Python. That guys as twisted as snake!
Part 3: Rights and responsibilities. -Planet New Berlin-
Simon was at his apartment in a hostel on Planet New Berlin. Monotonic pacing in the corridor was left unheard as he was sitting at a desk opposite the door, making some notes, making some calculations. It was a few days after the bounty and Simon consequently was counting his income and expenses. Suddenly he realized that hes not out of the financial struggle yet and it left Simon wondering. The Guild took thirty percent of the bounty and the remaining credits were split between Simon and Python. All in all, Simon still had over million credits to earn. Isnt a mans life worth enough?
Suddenly the door slashed in with a noise. A man with a gun was standing at the doorstep aiming at him. Simon was terrified by the intrusion and jumped out of his chair and grabbed upon the table consequently. The man turned his head on side by 45 degrees, closing one of his eyes.
Boom. He said blinking in a rather calm manner and started to giggle.
Simon had a closer look onto the man. It was Pancamo. He started to laugh heartily as Simon sighed in relief.
You scared me to death! Simon said catching his breath.
Still day dreaming arent you? Pancamo ignored Simons words, putting his weapon to his shoulder. He giggled once more Relax, this time its good news
Oh? Simon answered, he was recovering from the shock. Pancamo sat nearby and put his gun on table.
Yeah. Pancamo nodded Congratulations, kid. You have been given a clean apartment on Sheffeld and your ship will be moved out of the grey area to the main docks, once aboard the station.
Ha Simon made an artificial laugh. He did not believe a word Pancamo has said And why do you think I deserved that?
Pancamo smiled sarcastically.
Abilities of tactics and combat He quoted.
Right
Aha Pancamo smiled and confirmed it in a nod You should read your own reports more often.
He continued the speech.
Three escorts. All successful. No casualties. One bounty. Escort scattered, target annihilated. Blah, blah, blah. That beauraucractic nonsense...
Latest statement got Simon interested.
But I did not encountered any resistance on the escorts
You dont have to run into anyone to have an escort job completed Pancamo laughed again The escorts were successful nonetheless.
But the bounty? Python did all the dirty work
So? The bounty was executed anyway. Luck or not, face it, Simon. Your ratio of successful missions is at one hundred percent.
Perhaps, so Simon was getting convinced. Pancamo interrupted him and pat on shoulder.
It would be foolish not to accept whole deal, you know. You could use a private shower.
Silence settled, but Simon came up with a new question and asked anxiously.
Did you know Python is in a command of a thing? He asked.
No. Hes not
But I heard an executive saying
Simon was interrupted again.
Python climbed up the ladder recently. He was given full group to command on his latest contract, thats three wings of total nine people, you know... Appearantly previous mission with you got the guild's staff convinced. It's also no coincidence that you were given more rights as well. Simon, you climbed the ladder too. Pancamo smiled.
Now Simon understood what Pancamo was going on about. They had a few drinks to celebrate the occasion. A new conversation evolved around the table.
I dont think you came here to celebrate with me, Pancamo. There must be another reason why you got called to Berlin. You don't just visit your pals, unless its business Simon put his glass of water down. He always abstained from alcohol.
Yes youre right. There is matter involved Pancamo had a drink of his own.
And what would that be? Simon questioned.
Have quite a few questions about it, havent you? Pancamo wondered.
Yes and I want answers. Simon paused What is it that you got called here?
Its because of one of your side jobs as you like to call them.
Oh?
Pancamo stood up.
Come outside, youll see
-New Berlin Shipyard-
Pancamo and Simon were standing on launching ground in spaceport of New Berlin. Many ships were passing by.
This is the reason why I flew all my way up to here
I dont see anything Simon looked around. A lot of ships, dusts and smoke. Nothing of an interest caught his eye.
Do you remember Pancamo said and continued his speech there was this ground combat machine, called Cabal, that we could never assembly into an artificial space craft
Simon wasnt sure what was Pancamo speaking of.
In one of your logs you proposed to sell the machine to scrap He continued and discharge it of its weapons and mount them on our fighting vessels.
Pancamo smiled sarcastically. Simon seemed to recreate the event. Pancamo continued.
Well, our engineers figured even better. We mounted the weapons on this gunboat and modified it according to Cabals programming and frequencies. Pancamo pointed to a vessel a few steps away The gunboat is being monitored on ground by Cabal from a distance.
I remember now, but what does it have to do with me? Simon asked.
Well Since it was you who proposed this ingenious solution, Cabal was put under your hand for further analysis in space combat for an unlimited testing period Pancamo explained And it seems like I am the man to monitor and watch over your progress.
Part 4: The Hunter And The Hunted. -New Berlin orbit-
Roger that Bounty Hunters Bronze 3. You are clear to launch a robot voice announced on public channel. Simon appeared in space in his Manta a moment after. He was alone. Basic checks were performed and the ship was starting to gain speed.
Engines. Check. Weapons. Check. Life support. Check. Scanners Simon picked something. It was another Bounty Hunter in space that caught his attention. He paused check
A further scan on the other Bounty Hunter was complete. The pilot was working under callsign Cheshire. Simon gathered all the available intel about this individual. She is a well known Hammerhead pilot. Known among both criminals and Bounty Hunters. Famous for his many quests, piloting skills, lone wolf image, but most of all for her no pay, no services attitude. Simon decided to try his luck anyway.
This is Bounty Hunters Bronze 3 to Bounty Hunter Cheshire The pause was filled with uncertainty Shall we work together on this one?
The pilot must have gathered intel on Simon while Simon was doing the same. Apparently their ideas matched their plans completely.
I was thinking the same thing Cheshires reply was friendly and it was rather unexpected. Unfortunately I see no upcoming opportunities
Simon entered Cheshires formation and they were having a conversation about business. Situation in Rheinland seemed to be a pretty dull one, so Simon suggested moving to Kusari, as there was a bounty on all Kusari pirates at that time. Cheshire said she didnt like the idea, as he was a witness of Kusarian government inability to meet the requirements of contracts when dealing with foreigners earlier and credit transfers were always later. Kusari didnt like foreigners. They could pay Bounty Hunters well, but are often offended with someone else trying to cope with their inner problems. It is a matter of honour for them. However, this was the only available job for the time and Simon with Cheshire decided to move further into the Sigmas.
Cheshire wasnt passionate about going to Kusari itself and was hoping to earn something by scanning cargo for contraband in Sigma 13. The intel about smugglers was a good opportunity to increase daily salary for Bounty Hunters.
They were scanning convoys for a while now. No trace of smuggling was found so far. The instability in Sigma 13 grew as there was an ion storm coming up ahead, but Cheshire did not wish to return with empty hands. Simon changed his mind as well as a target of opportunity presented itself. It was a NovaPG Blood Dragon. One of the Kusari pirates elite. He was spotted within the sensor range, but the source couldnt be located and the trace vanished. Simon and Cheshire were now cruising through the clouds, looking for the pirate. Electricity in space was increasing. Simon felt that by his own skin. The atmosphere made shivers run down his spine. There was a tension felt in the area. Space became static, preparing for the storm. Suddenly Cheshire picked the Blood Dragon on sensors ahead. He was heading towards the Chugoku jump hole, probably trying to hide from the storm. The Bounty Hunters were trying to locate exact coordinates of pirates location. It seemed that Cheshire managed to locate the pirate, since something was submitted via private channel, but Simon couldnt hear a thing as all the frequencies were jammed. The ion storm struck.
-Sigma 13 system. Chugoku jump hole after the ion storm.-
The Manta recovered from the ion storm. Simon opened his eyes. He was right above the Chugoku jump hole. Sigma 13 was starting to recover after the storm as well, since the convoys were starting to launch from various places and the number of radio transmissions were increasing. Simon received one as well.
Hey, Simon. Its me, Cheshire. Im speaking from Naha station A deep breath followed Look. My Hammerhead I stayed conscious when the storm struck but couldnt recharge my ship back up fully. This installation tractored me and my ship in. I managed to make the scan on the area just before the ion storm. There are two unknown Blood Dragons vessels in Chugoku system. It seems as there is a mercenary named Haelyn there as well. I dont know who he is working for. Im afraid the choice is yours now. Youre on your own out there.
The message ended. Simon made a scan of his own that confirmed Cheshires testimony. But Simon also picked a trader coming in. He was approaching. The trader was contacted via private channel.
I will pay you if you can supply me with information of what these two Blood Dragons are flying Simon applied straight away.
The trader went through the jump hole without an answer. However, he was soon to jump out with the Blood Dragons on his tail, who were chasing him. The two pirates soon changed their target and switched their fire on Simon. Simon was caught unexpected. He instinctually activated Mantas thrusters to dodge the fire and hurried towards the trade lane. It was only seconds after Simon docked with the trade lane after it went out. It was this close.
Mercenary, I will pay you 20 million credits if you kill this Bounty Hunter A Blood Dragon said after turning back to Chugoku.
The mercenary whose name was Haelyn was chasing Simon for a bit, but soon Simon managed to get away, out of sensor range. He was now cruising like crazy, not even looking back, driven by only one instinct survival.
Simon lost the mercenary at New Tokyo. He could take a deeper breath, although his hands were still shaking from the shock and adrenaline. The trader contacted him through private channel.
I was about to thank you hunter The trader said You gave me enough time to escape. Thank you
The trader suggested meeting above planet New Tokyo, where he would pay Simon 4 million credits for the help. The time was running. Simon was standing by in planets orbit, recovering from fear the. He only now started to think clearly, as his instincts overthrew Simon during the escape. But it was too late. The trader did not show up. Haelyn jumped through the trade lane and attacked Simon. The hunter have become the hunted.
The mercenary was flying a gunboat. Simon knew he had no chances one on one against something this big, but he used Mantas maneuverability to avoid contact. Simon used cover of nearby station to escape into a trade lane. Haelyn was behind him, breathing onto his neck.
He realized it then. The trader sold him out, he set Simon up and pushed into the danger. It was too late to think about that whatsoever, Simon had to escape to Liberty.
Simon saw Haelyn on his scanners on all his way through the Independent worlds. One time Simon managed to break through, the other time Haelyn was right on his back, trying to shoot the trade lanes.
It was a tensioned chase up to Colorado. Simon dropped a mine on a trade lane in Galileo, blowing it to dust. It was a terrible thing to do, but it saved Simons life as the mercenary was slowed down. Some traders could come to harm by this action and it wasnt that Simon didnt care. He was thinking about his own life at the moment, not anyones else.
Simon now knew that he wasnt working alone. There could be whole lot more of them out there. Simon opened Navigation Computer. The Bounty Hunter knowledge helped greatly. There was a jump hole to New York in the sector. Simon decided using it right away, to avoid unnecessary contact by the jump gate. The strategy worked as he arrived to New York safely. S-O-S signal was transmitted to every Liberty Special Forces agent Simon could find in the area. He managed to land on Manhattan, where he was put under protection from Liberty Police for a short time. However, to Simons surprise, the lawful forces made no attempt in trying to force the mercenary out of the system. It was even greater surprise when the mercenary contacted him privately.
Relax, kid. Haelyn said If I wanted to hurt you, you were already dead
Such confident words from such a low life Simon thought.
Im surprised such a lawful mercenary like you is given clearance to fly Liberty space
I have my acquaintances, but its a different theme. Don't get me wrong, Liberty is my primary client, but I'm willing to take opportunities. You shouldnt be worried now." - He took a paused and continued anxiously - "Now tell me Were you scared?
Yes I answered.
Thats all I could wish for. Godspeed.
Simon knew that corruption was inevitable to some degree but he always believed that Liberty was the House to do best to it's extent in law keeping. He wasn't so sure about who the good guys were now. His morals scumbled.
"I have to leave as soon as possible" - He thought.
Part 5: The Dissapointment. -Sheffield stations bar, Manchester system-
It was evening on Sheffield and the bar seemed crowded with people. The background was noisy with chatters, bar talks and shouts. Bounty Hunters were celebrating yet another end of the day.
Three Bounty Hunters were already celebrating actively at the table next to Simon. He was the only one to sit still and turn his glass. Simon never drinks alcohol, yet this day was different. Simon just ordered another sidewinder fang from the bartender. Three glasses were already empty and another one was on its way. He didnt seem glad about it either. Simon leaned his chin by hand, and lowered his head, seeming depressed. One of the Bounty Hunters glanced back his shoulder and noticed Simon tarrying. The Bounty Hunter frowned, said something to his associates and rose from his chair after a nod. The man turned back and walked to Simon. He approached the table where Simon was sitting, looked down to him and crossed his arms. The Bounty Hunter started speaking in a rough sounding voice tone.
Me and my associates here He pointed at the table with his friends Were discussing that its very rude of you to sit here and ruin our mood with your sobbing.
Simon kept looking down to his table he felt trouble coming, but did not care. No answer was heard.
The Bounty Hunter frowned again.
Look He aggressively put his fists on table and leaned forward. Either you go away orI will make sure you never walk again
Simon glanced up.
Im not going anywhere He mumbled quietly, checking his glass.
The Bounty Hunter was furious. He grabbed Simon by his coat and was about unleash his fist, but another person behind prevented him from striking. The other man was right behind, holding the Bounty Hunters fist in his hand. It was Pancamo.
Pancamo looked around if no police officers were watching and put his Buckshot blaster, which was under the coat, to the Bounty Hunters side.
You will now turn around, walk to the door and leave. Calmly Pancamo loaded the weapon. You could hear the click.
Bounty Hunter was caught from behind with surprise. He turned back to the next table only to see that his friends were long gone. The Bounty Hunter ran towards the door as soon as Pancamo let go of him.
What the hell are you doing here!? Pancamo seemed no less mad than the other Bounty Hunter before him - What gives you the right to degrade!?
Simon remained to sit around his table. Pancamo wasnt satisfied to be ignored. He grabbed Simon from the chair and started moving towards the exit with him.
Wasnt it you who said that you dont drink anything at all? I dont care if youre depressed, you must not act like this. These Bounty Hunters were pirates once and they dont look kindly to ex police officers He said while crossing hallroom with Simon upon his shoulders Lets take you back and into a shower. A guy like you shouldnt drink at all
Part 6: The Finer Things in Life.
-Personal apartment, Sheffield station-
Simon was woken up by someones soft slap on his cheek. He opened his eyes briefly.
Oh my head He grabbed himself by his head.
Aye. Now you know it Pancamo was sitting next to Simon trying to cast him back out of sleep.
Oh, right Pancamo remembered Some water
He was quick to back with a glass of water from the next room.
Drink it
Simon sat on the couch. He greedily swallowed the fluid. Pancamo sarcastically smiled upon him.
Now youre a real Bounty Hunter, Simon He started laughing. Simon glanced towards Pancamo, then back to his glass.
Remind me not to do it ever again
Thats all okay here. Happens to everyone, you know. Pancamo took the glass Ill get some more of water for you.
I guess I overreacted Simon said to himself, Pancamo was already behind the wa;;. He started to shout, while pouring the water to the glass, so that Simon could hear it in the other room.
Simon? - He shouted.
Yeah?
I know it just isnt your day today, but I need you to do something for me He came back with the glass and placed it in front of Simon, on a table nearby. This Interspace Commerce rep has asked me to escort him to New York system, but I cant make it. I know you dont like Liberty due to recent events, but I need you to win me some time
Pancamo lowered his voice.
Something is up He looked around and leaned closer to Simon Im not so sure what yet, I have to make some contacts in Cambridge, but my schedule has to be complete, so that no one knows I left, do you understand?
Yes of course, anyhing you want me to. Ill be on Manhattan at this time the day after tomorrow.
Thank you, Simon. Ill contact you as soon as I grab the straw. Oh and by the way." - Pancamo paused and smiled - "Call me Chuck.
He patted Simon on back and left the apartment.
-Planet Manhattan space, New York system-
Simon was flying his Manta, the Bounty Hunters fighter, across the space, minding his own business. Another Bounty Hunter by the name of Sabine Delorme was in the area. She greeted Simon in a hail.
Greetings Savine Simon tried to correct the mistake. Bretonia was not his mother language. I am sorry Sabine
Havent your mother taught you it is not nice to misspell peoples names? The Bounty Hunter asked making fun of Simon's spelling.
One thing Simon learned on Sheffield, though, was to never let anyone to mess around with you.
Are you implying something about my mother? Sabine felt uncomfortable.
Of course not She said without a blink.
Very well. No need for violence then, eh? A threat from Simon sounded rather funny
I agree Sabine did not feel disturbed.
A long pause followed. After a few insults thrown to each they could finally continue a civilized conversation. Simon spoke up.
So, what is it that you came to Liberty for?
Definitely not for ale She said. That made Simon smile.
How have business been lately then?
Unfortunately not as good as it used to be.
Is that so? I have just finished an escorting mission. Long gaps between the contracts, arent they?
Yes, but coffee makes up for it. Would you like to have some yourself?
Of course. I will see you on the flight deck in a second.
Simons Manta moored with Sabines gunship and entered through the channel door. It was soon before they were sitting in front of each other in cockpit chatting and discussing the news. Sabine seemed quite a charming companion and an interesting person to talk to, but the conversation did not last long as s-o-s signal was received from a trader at Colorado jump gate. Some Rogue was after him.
Sabine, I know the Guilds Code, but we need to help this man He said. Pancamo would never let Simon interfere in battle, if they arent being paid. Even if a sake of mans life is in danger.
Damn the Guild Code. I am moving to intercept. Depart with your ship Sabine commanded.
Simon loved what he heard, his eyes were now shining. Sabine was concerned about protection of citizens, just as he was. She was no ordinary Bounty Hunter.
They moved throughout the trade lane and already saw the trader fleeing to Manhattan.
I think I shook him off the trader replied. The bandit, no doubt, left as soon as he heard of Bounty Hunter contacts coming in fast.
The trader was pleased with the help and hired both of the pilots as his escorts. They set off course to Plane Juno in Kusari with Prisoners and then off to New London system with Engine Components. The amount of previous goods was small, therefore there were no restrictions for the convoy.
Simon and Sabine were talking on the trade run, paying more attention to ourselves than protection, but everything appeared to be going smoothly. Simon was travelling through Kusari space for the first time apart from the time when he had to run away from Sigmas. He hasnt realized its beauty before, since he really was in a hurry, but now Kusari seemed a beautiful, charming place to him.
I spent quite a lot of my childhood here Sabine said.
Really? I hail from Omega 7 system. Have you ever heard of Freistadt?
Freistadt? That is quite far from here isnt it?
Yes, it is a long story Simon sighed. It reminded him of his home and his loved ones again. He almost felt guilty talking with another girl. However Sabine cheered him up eventually.
I believe it is She said The story must be rather interesting. Unlike you, I am just an ordinary Bounty Hunter born on Sheffield station
Really? I am stationed on Sheffield myself. It acts as headquarters for my operations. That is where you go if you leave the Omegas. Simon explained.
It is rather strange that we have never met before
Im not so surprised. Simon replied Sheffield is filled with Bounty Hunters.
He paused.
Also, have it mind that Bounty Hunters are rather mobile people Smile brushed across his face.
Youre probably right then. Sabine agreed.
They were talking like that for days evolving around many different themes from business to private lives until the final destination was reached. Credits that the trader paid for the escorting service were split and the Bounty Hunters and they were about to head back to Sheffield.
Drinks are all on me when we reach Sheffield Simon said. He was in a good mood this morning.
No way That was Sabines answer. Simon thought he had said something wrong, but then Sabine smiled and cleared away all the doubts. - They are on me
To what seemed to be a bad conversation that started above Manhattan, now turned into a nice friendship.
Part 7: The Hidden Meaning
-Hallways of Sheffield station, Manchester system-
A man covered in Independent Miners Guild gown walked along empty corridor on Sheffield. It was an odd sight for an eye of another, but it seems that there was no one watching as the man continued to pace down the hall. He suddenly stopped by the door to a bar and leaned towards the wall, seeming as he would have been here for quite a while and only the wall could keep him standing for so long. The corridor was empty and silent, but you could hear all kind of screams and shouts at the other side of this door, where the bar was stationed. It wasnt even a minute before the door opened from the other side and a young persons figure appeared in front of the man with casual IMG clothes. He was obviously waiting for the meeting, as he spoke up to the Bounty Hunter without raising his head:
So, Sabine, you have found him after all.
That means we are even, Chuck. The debt has been paid. A sweet voice of a young woman addressed to the strange looking man.
I do believe you kept him save during the time of my absence. Where is he now? The man replied.
Babysitting is not hard, hun. He is right behind the door, I left him alone on the table The Bounty Hunter said and looked away, walking down the corridor. The door opened again as the woman was pacing and the man faded away in the crowd of the bar.
Simon was sitting calmly around his table, waiting for his friend to come back. It was a rather quiet morning, but only in sense of noise and sound pollution. Simon wouldnt walk without a blaster in this area of the station anymore. He would learn from his mistakes.
Instead of the friend another man in the already mentioned IMG gear walked towards Simon and sit in front of him. Simon was about to reach for his for his Buckshot, when he realized that the man in front of him was the same that had given the blaster to him in the first place. Pancamo removed his hood and Simon recognized the guest as he was shocked yet again by the strange presence of his associate.
Pancamo? Wheres Sabine? And what are you doing here in these IMG clothes?
I am afraid there is no time to talk now, at least not here. I am most glad to see you, but we have to leave as soon as possible, Ill explain everything in space
-Manchester system, New London jump gate, outer space-
Pancamo was in flight deck of his Manta, counting time before departure to New London system, when Simon caught up.
You sure am in a hurry, Chuck Simon addressed in name, hoping for a honest answer Well, what is the matter? Is there some other bounty on its way?
No, it is not the credits this time, this time it is personal. It is about Python. Do you remember when he left to the Omegas after some big fish? I have always feared this. No signal was received since Python and his wings entered Wikes Ice Field in Omega 3 system.
So my new accidental acquaintance was no accidental after all?
Pancamo continued, ignoring the sarcastic remark completely. This was serious.
I have tried to lurk around in Cambridge system and I think I have finally grabbed a straw. Ive met a Bounty Hunter, who used to be Corsair before he bailed out recently, on Cardiff station. He supplied me with some information. I think an ambush was planned by Hessians on Python purposely. They have used their leader, who is a rather mysterious one, as a bait to lure Python out. What worries me, though is that I can not think of any reason why would Hessians want Python dead so badly. Pancamo engaged system jump sequence and continued The Bounty Hunter that I met directed me to a Zoner that usually cooperates with Corsairs on Freeport 1. This is even more worrisome. It seems that, someone purposely leaked information about ambush. Whoever did this, he wanted the Zoner and Corsairs to know about it.
Why would Hessians want Corsairs to know about their plans?
I do not know Pancamo paused, he was not sure about many things himself Lets us continue to Cambridge, we have friends waiting for us there.
Part 8: Family Reunion
-Somewhere in Omega 3 system-
Mark, where is that cover!?
Laser blast scorched the space and bumped into Pythons Mantas hull.
Dam it, Mark! Give me some damn cover!
Two Corsair fighters were approaching in front, closing within fire range. Another Manta moved in at 4 oclock and opened fire. The two Corsairs Titan fighters split up and moved opposite directions. Then Python activated his thrusters as well as his weapons. One Corsair was dispatched.
Hang in there, boys! I feel them weakening.
Battle was taking place around the rocks in Wikes ice field. Four outnumbered Bounty Hunters were fighting off a huge force of Corsair fighters.
-Meanwhile in Cambridge system-
Simon and Pancamo exit the trade lane and flew towards Planet Cambridge.
What a beauty Simon thought.
A Manta dived around passing convoys and joined formation with the small group.
I am glad you decided to show up, Cheshire Pancamo applied.
A friend of mine on Cardiff mentioned Simon is going after Sitting Buffalo. The man is dangerous, I could not leave you alone. She smiled Do not understand my intentions wrong, though. While I do owe you from the Sigmas, my primary intention is the bounty itself.
Thats just what we expected, havent we, Simon? Pancamo was obviously sarcastic There is still one being we are waiting for, though. We are going to have whole army on this one if this continues.
A being? Cheshire could not understand the clue.
Cabal gunboat has just launched to space, he was accompanied by Sabine Delorme, who obviously decided to give guys a hand.
Part 9: Public secret
-Above Freeport 1, Omega 3 system-
The four fighters and gunboat Cabal were hanging above Freeport 1 after a lane jump leading from Cambidge gate. Pancamo was getting impatient.
We cant afford to idle any longer He said, checking something under his belt Delorme, take Cheshire and Cabal together into Wikes field. I and Simon will see this Zoner, he sent us a transmission telling to meet him on Freeport. We will fill you in once we meet him and acquire accurate coordinates.
Alright then, boys, have fun. Cheshire, lets take off. Simon, how do you make that thing She pointed at Cabal Follow you anyway?
The group splitted and advanced towards the Ice Field in front. Pancamo contacted Simon once they were left alone.
I dont like the look of this. The Zoner It was something odd about him. He told us to meet him in a warehouse.
Keeping low profile, perhaps?
I hope so
-Freeport 1, the docks-
Simon climbed down his Manta as he pushed ships hangar away. The small docking bay was operated artificially. Few spotlights, a lot of machines. It was no unordinary thing, or so it seemed. The Zoners did not have enough workers capable of doing all the work themselves.
Simon proceeded out of the docking bay. He passed a narrow corridor, thin connecting shaft, filled with various boxes, cases and equipment and then he advanced to the main dock through the door. The main dock was round, with multiple doors leading to separate hangars and of course, elevator to the upper level of the facility. Simon looked back to see if Pancamo was on his way through another of these corridors, but it seemed quiet. Having in mind that his friend could already be on the other side of warehouse door, Simon decided to go through.
As Simon closely paced forward, he noticed the warehouse to be filled with heavy docks machinery on the sides and a large row of containers put on each other, forming two levels of staircase in the middle of the warehouse. Simon walked up to front. There was this man in Zoners gown sitting right in front of him in the middle of the warehouse. Simon tried to approach him, as he heard steps behind his back. He thought it to be Pancamo and turned around anxiously, but instead he saw a Hessian aiming a blaster right at him. Simons face turned pale as the Hessian pressed the trigger. He quickly bounced to side, only to make sure that the shot wasnt actually aimed at him, but at the Zoner himself. The Zoner fell dead along with the chair. Appearantly he was tied up with it from the beginning. That Hessian was here first, waiting.
What do you want!? Simon shouted and took cover behind the containers. The Hessian tried his luck shooting again, but the shot only went as far as floor.
Oh, I will tell everything to you He said hiding on the other side of the boxes My name is Schneider. I am Red Hessian and you are my safe passage, dead or alive.
Schneider reloaded his weapon. You could hear a click.
Why would you need me Simon replied in a calm manner, he was winning some time, taking out his Buckshot, giving it to his legs.
Oh, so you do not know? The Hessian giggled That bastard, Buffalo planned it well. This may have leaded you straight to him
Schneider crouched over the boxes, but the other part of the containers showed no sign of his opponent as he landed. Simon may have as well made his way around to the other side.
I dont understand
Nor would you. Have you thought that the Hessians were after that Bounty Hunter, friend of yours? Nonsense! He would never care about him. Buffalo organized the ambush for your friend, knowing that you would come to his aid. The ambush was of course only a scam. You see, I and Buffalo never got along very well, especially after that time when I took a team out of patrol to the Abgrund in search for Diamonds. The bloody revolutionist swine wanted to get rid of me and persuaded many others to put me in charge of this ambush, saying that it would be a good chance to get rid off a quickly rising Bounty Hunter scum Python. He wanted to do both, get rid off me and lure you at once. Double gain, ha! All was a trick, a trick that was supposed to end it with my death! Schneider seemed paranoid as he continued But I oversaw his plan! Ha! No way will he have my corpse! Never!
Knowing that Simon moved around the containers and will attempt to approach from the back, Schneider changed his direction and took cover behind the corner, where Simon was.
Why would anyone like Buffalo want me?
I do not know and I do not care, kid. All I know is that he wants you and thats my runaway ticket. The bastard only wanted to get me killed, leaking information to that pathetic excuse for a Zoner. He knew the Corsairs wouldnt miss a chance striking both Bounty Hunters and Red Hessians gathered at one spot. Buffalo used the information of our positions to manipulate Corsairs and strike right at his own comrades! Corsairs striked from behind and not on Bounty Hunters, but our line. Buffalo, it seems, did not care about Python or even wanted him to survive, he was never a figure here, only a tool. The charge obliterated Hessians in seconds, but I knew better! Ive escaped to go after you. Buffalo wanted to kill me, that is true, but it seems that finding you was no less of a priority. Schneider uncovered I know all about you, Simon. Ive seen your official statistics by the Guild, which are impressive, but I also know much more. I know that you were never a warrior like me, Simon. All of the stats are the consequences of your friends Pancamo experience combined with Cabals armoured plate. But they are not here now, are they Simon? Pancamo is being held off by two boys of mine. And alone you are vey assailable. This shall be the end.
Saying these words Schneider confidently turned around the corner aiming straight ahead. To his surprise there was no one standing there. His face turned pale as he felt a Buckshots edge on his temple. Schneider did his calculations right, he came around right and approached Simon from the back. What he failed to perceive was that Simon could have climbed on a container and lurk for the moment of when Schneider turns around the angle.
Schneider let go of his Nattertum Zwei as it hit the ground. He knew this mistake would cost him his life and he fell into tears.
It is true that Cabal, Pancamo and even Python compensated my poor combat abilities, but dont you think it wouldnt have been only a matter of time before I improved over all this time that I spent with such skilled companions? Simon pressed the trigger and it was over.
He ran out of the warehouse and into the hangar, where Pancamos Manta landed, in fear that something would have happened to him. Simon approached the door to the connecting corridor leading to the bay, but before he would press the right buttons to open it the door slammed wide and a Hessian felt out of it with a burned hole in his chest. To Simons surprise it was not Pancamo, but Python who was standing on the other side with a blaster in hand. Another Hessian was lying close to Pythons feet.
These guys would not let him pass Python said as he pointed towards Pancamo.
Pancamo was knocked out, being treated by Sabine from a head injury made by a handle of a blaster. They have returned just in time to save him.
