Technically, I broke a rule of engagement when my Maquis ship engaged a trio of your bombers several hours ago without asking for prior permission. However, I figured that one Gallic civilian LF wasn't going to be hugely unbalancing, considering you were leisurely torpedoing a pair of GAUL Battleship and then hiding to regen in the debris field. And anyway, I did yell my allegiance before engaging. And the GAUL ships had essentially requested my presence before the engagement began.
Observation to anyone who cares to read: Capships must have escort against bombers. Preferably a VHF. Or at least something to kick through UAU VIII.
Breaking a rule of engagement? I recall reading your engage notice perfectly, so what's the issue? You didn't do anything wrong (Also, you don't need to ask for permission :-/ ).
Haha ok, I thought I'd post just in case. I'd read some things in the forums about people just jumping into group fights which was, in those situations, not cool.
Wait, you hit my LF with a *Torpedo*?
Oh dear. Time for some flying practice.

There was a rule back in 4.82 when you had to ask for permission before engaging anyone in PvP. But that was back when the server was capped at 50 people.
There is an unspoken rule about jumping into balanced groupfights with little notice. For instance, if you come across 6 fighters going 3v3 in your destroyer, going: "ENGAGING X(after RPing)" and then shooting might be construed as problematic. Some people wouldn't mind, others would. Some people have fought against ganks and generally don't mind that much unless it's taken to a sheer level of ridiculousness; others seem to mind when fights start as 3v3s, then end up 3v1s. They think that one side should "peel" off members as the other side loses members.
You're not breaking a rule so long as you RP. You don't even need to inform someone you're engaging - shooting at them does that. But, if you do jump into a fight that's even, just be aware that you could tick some people off, but in reality, you should do what you think is fun for you while keeping in mind whether or not you'd like what you're doing to someone else if its done to you.
Gankers seem awfully hypocritical when it comes to that paradox. They like to gank people, defending it by saying that it's a legitimate tactic, only to be faced with the awful feeling when they themselves get ganked in return - while finding that they can't complain, since their enemy used a "legit" tactic on them.
Hope that helps.
