Surley the easisest solution is to ramp up cap shield regen, while reducing capacity, so that lower DPS weapons like fighter guns will have little to no effect, while SACs will be able to take em out in 1 hit?

Modern engagements are typically performed with only a few fighters/bombers (compared to the large squadrons common in WWII). As for sinking ships...I don't know offhand of any instances, but I'm sure someone can come up with one.
considering the kind of payload the bombers today carry today as opposed to what they did 60 years ago.
Today we worry about one crazy guy walking in a crowded city wit ha dirty bomb and taking out 20 blocks around him. So I would say yes, today's bombers are capable of damaging a BS from a distance.
Now fast forwards way into the future (Is there a need for Battle platforms?, yes.... why ? to show superior might and have a command center where the minds can converge and form battle plans in the theater. Also to decimate outposts dsuring an Invasion.
How would I protect it using game mechanics:
1. Increase Hull capacity 10 fold. (with cau8, it will take a very long time for a BS to die.)
2. I still would advocate removing shield busters from fighters (primarily infernos, all class 10 and 9 shield busters...yeah yeah I know). Then they still should be able to kill each other and cause a much smaller dent on a cap's shields. (I guess going back to the root of the topic, 5 sabres with infernos will kill the shield of anything eventually). Try setup without top shield busters and tell me if its really that bad against other fighters.
3. Make bombers all shield killers.
a. If novas work I really would like to see SNACs nerfed a little may be a 10k/35k hull/shield buster with a .20 refire. Make nova torps the big shield busters they all want to avoid getting hit with. I personally think novas could have been made to work right now if the explosion rate was slowed enough (about 140) and the area increased significantly. Allowing bomber to make a massive epic slow moving explosion big enough to engulf the shield generator yet allowing it and toher smaller ships to fly out of the harms way. Remember, the big ships have a speed cap of 80 unless they start cruise (anoother time consuming process).
b. Bomber specific mines? May be a class 6 mine that only a bomber can use...
45k shield damage /4k hull damage. 40 speed.
