While Zetsumai Keisotsu made the Kiretsu Squadron what it is today, it was originally formed by Shotou Kakujin as Kuromeru Squadron. Being relatively new and under the control of the Chrysanthemum Elders, the squadron was assigned green pilots, those with little to no combat experience, while they favored the elite squadrons with the more experienced pilots.
Much of Kuromeru Squadron's activities and missions were bland and ordinary, at least from the viewpoint of a Golden Chrysanthemum. Shotou continually asked for more important missions than commerce interdiction and eventually got what she asked for, though it turned out not to be what she wanted. In order to free a captured Elder, and others, from Fuchu Prison, Shotou, her five pilots, and two dozen other Chrysanthemum and Blood Dragon pilots were being sent to suppress the Prison's defenses while transports with soldiers boarded the station and rescued as many people as they could. Shotou's Kuromeru Squadron was tasked with keeping Battleship Myoko and its fighters from getting close enough to destroy the transports.
It was known that it was a suicide mission, for Shotou and her pilots to sacrifice themselves in order to buy the transports enough time to get in and out. Despite that, Shotou and her wingmate managed to survive the battle, though Shotou was severely injured and her ship destroyed.
One of the women rescued from Fuchu Prison was Zetsumai Keisotsu. She, her brother, and both of her parents were to be arrested and executed for treason. The charge was nothing but smokescreen the Kempetei used to justify their executions to make sure those involved in the design of the Naval Force's new Sunfrenzy 3 couldn't release the information they had about it to others. Zetsumai and her parents had all worked on Kansai Research Station while her brother was a recruit in the Naval Forces.
Her brother, Kaiten Keisotsu, managed to flee to Rheinland before he could be arrested, but their parents were executed before the raid on Fuchu Prison. Having nothing left besides her brother, who was out of reach in Rheinland, Zetsumai joined the Chrysanthemums to satisfy her thirst for revenge.
The Chrysanthemums gladly accepted her and assigned her to Shotou's Kuromeru Squadron to replenish it's stock of pilots after the raid on Fuchu Prison. Zetsumai spent about a year in Kuromeru Squadron before becoming Shotou's Second-in-Command. Due to Shotou's injury she wasn't able to pilot fighters at the level of other pilots so she flew a bomber into fights, usually going after hostile capital ships while Zetsumai led the fighters in covering her. Shotou's refusal to back out of the Chrysanthemum's pilot ranks ended up killing her when she was unable to pilot as well as her enemies, leaving Zetsumai in charge of Kiretsu.
Zetsumai ran Kuromeru Squadron for a time as Shotou had, but the Elders began to disgust and disappoint her. They tended to send pilots out against targets that were more important to satisfying the Elder's greed and personal ambitions than the greater good of the Chrysanthemums and Kusari.
Zetsumai realized that operating under the Elders was no longer the best course of action, and decided to set about breaking ties with the ruling body of the Chrysanthemums. The first step towards that was to rebase Kuromeru Squadron from Battleship Matsuda, which had just recently been rebuilt in Okinawa, where the Elder's control was still weak. It was also looked at as inspiration, returning to the goals, policies, and purity of Yuyu Matsuda.
To farther separate ties and make a political statement towards the Elders, Zetsumai renamed Kuromeru Squadron to Kiretsu Sentai Dageki - Kiretsu Strike Squadron. The name Kiretsu having two meanings; 'Violence' symbolized Zetsumai's intent to return to the way the Chrysanthemums were before the Elder's perversion. Kiretsu was focusing its efforts on Samura, The Hogosha, and their supporters to destroy Samura's political control and ruin the Hogosha's hold over the black market, as opposed to trying to strike the Kusari military directly.
Zetsumai knew that to fight the Naval Forces head-on would get them no-where and only risk pilots and ships, neither of which they could replace as easily as the Naval Forces could. But fleets can't exist without large amounts of money, supplies, and political support. Zetsumai's plan was to deny them by disrupting Kusari trade whenever and wherever possible.
The second meaning; 'Fissure' symbolized the divide the Empire's government and its people, and the Kiretsu Squadron would do whatever it could to widen that divide. It also symbolized the divide between the Chrysanthemum's Elders and the pilots they used to fulfill their selfish ambitions.
Once Zetsumai moved the Squadron, which consisted of only four pilots at the time, to Battleship Matsuda, she began to pull in pilots wherever she could and train them up to higher and higher levels of skill. One of these pilots, Aosoraki, proved to be an exceptional pilot and tactician, and agreed with many of the philosophies concerning the Golden Chrysanthemums and Kusari that Zetsumai held. Zetsumai devoted large amounts of her time to Aosoraki, grooming her to be Kiretsu's Second-in-Command.
With Aosoraki now prepared for her position as the Squadron's Executive Officer, Kiretsu began to start making a name for itself within Kusari and the Sigma systems. But with public attention also came attention from the Chrysanthemum Elders. Due to their manipulation, available pilots that Zetsumai could entice to fly under her banner became fewer and fewer.
Just as it looked like the Elders were going to reclaim control over Kiretsu, a Outcast named Zacarias Poncho, a Don from the Blue Lotus Syndicate, sent a message to the Chrysanthemums requesting that they procure a Blood Dragon Bomber for him. It was questioned as to what he could possibly want it for, and why he didn't go directly to the Blood Dragons with the request, slowing the process. Zetsumai took advantage of this and obtained a Blood Dragon bomber from an old acquaintance of Shotou Kakujin's aboard Kyoto and managed to barter herself a Dragon Bomber which she offered to Don Poncho in return for a small Cardamine plantation on Malta, as well as a transport made available for ferry the Cardamine to Battleship Matsuda.
With this act, Kiretsu began bringing in large amounts of credits by providing Cardamine to Matsuda's inhabitants. Without the Outcasts acting as middlemen, the Cardamine coming from Zetsumai's plantation was available for much lower prices than usual. By owning land on Malta, Zetsumai gained influence among the Outcasts, some of it good and some bad, as many of them were disgruntled with a non-Outcast owning any of their prized Malta. And by providing the majority of Matsuda's Cardamine, she reduced the Elder's influence on the station and over Kiretsu.
With the new influx of cash, the Kiretsu were able to purchase their own ships, equipment, and supplies without going through the Elders. The Kiretsu Squadron was slowly pulling itself and the rest of Battleship Matsuda's Chrysanthemums out from under the selfish claws of the Elders. Many of the pilots on Matsuda were willing to once again help the Kiretsu in their operations, though recruitment was still dry, leaving Zetsumai and Aosoraki alone with two of the last of the remaining members of Kuromeru Squadron.
Around the middle of year 816 A.S. the Consortium made itself known to the Chrysanthemums, though its existence wasn't known to the rest of Kusari until the start of 817 A.S. The Consortium's leader, a cyborg who went by the nickname 'Iron Watsas' due to the fact that he was eighty percent metal, contacted Zetsumai for help in Kyushu. When she arrived she found a disabled Chrysanthemum bomber, piloted by an 'Enya Shinkaku.'
When they managed to get inside the bomber they found Enya unconscious, the result of a severe Cardamine withdrawal. Iron Watsas moved Enya to his fighter's cargohold while Zetsumai probed through her bomber, finding another woman in the ship's cargohold; Evie Knight.
After taking both Enya and Evie to Morioka Station in Tau-65, both women received treatment for their respective situations. A simple dose of Cardamine managed to get Enya on her feet again, though the abdominal wound Evie had suffered required much more. Once Enya was conscious, Zetsumai's interrogation of her revealed that Evie Knight was an LSF operative and Enya had shot down her fighter and taken her prisoner. Once both women had recovered Enya attempted to kill Evie several times, and it eventually took violence to subdue the woman.
For security reasons Zetsumai injected her with large amounts of Liquid Cardamine. Not so much that it would cause permanent harm, but enough to make her unaware of her surroundings until she was fully dependent on the drug. Once she was addicted, Zetsumai used the dependency to force Evie's cooperation.
Zetsumai kept Evie's existence hidden from the Chrysanthemum Elders as much as possible until much later when she had become a full member of Kiretsu, for fear they may try to take her and use her for their own agendas.
In 815 A.S. Zetsumai's brother, Kaiten Keisotsu, had left the Bundschuh and traveled to Malta, the result of a request by Zetsumai to Don Zacarias Poncho back when the alliance between the Bundschuh and Outcasts was still in place. Kaiten Keisotsu had been put in charge of Zetsumai's plantation on Malta, as well as being a pilot for the Blue Lotus Syndicate. By 816 A.S. Kaiten was making regular trips to Kusari, where he would often stop by Chrysanthemum bases.
At the same time, a Maltan named Vitale Demetri, Don Vincenzo Fedele's nephew, had been put in charge of the management and safety of the transports taking Cardamine from Zetsumai's plantation to the Chrysanthemum stations in Kusari. Later, near the end of 817 A.S. Vitale would become Don of the Fedele-Demetri family due to Vincenzo's death and the death of his older brother, Luciano Demetri.
So it came to be that Vitale, Kaiten, Zetsumai, Evie, Enya, and Iron Watsas were all aboard Morioka Station at the same time. Through a series of bloody, charming, touching, disgusting, confusing, suicidal, murderous, and the most bizarre events Vitale and Evie, a Maltan and Libertonian respectively, fell for one another, as did Enya and Kaiten, much to his sister's displeasure.. And through Kaiten and Vitale's meddling, managed to get both Enya and Evie to give Zetsumai their loyalty and became the two newest members of her squadron.
The rest of the year proceeded normally.. In comparison. Kiretsu Squadron continued it's raiding of Samura, attacks on Hogosha, and general nuisance in Kusari. Near the beginning of 817 A.S. the Consortium lead by Iron Watsas, a cyborg, began launching attacks on Kusari in cooperation with both divisions of the Golden Chrysanthemums. Using Outcast technology, the Consortium provided heavy firepower that the Chrysanthemums could not with their two Outcast Destroyers.
Due to the Consortium's questionable activities involving the Nomads and Iseijin, the Nomad-infested Kusarians left over from Tekagi's reign, the Chrysanthemum Elders made ultimatums to the Consortium and moved to banish them from all Chrysanthemum stations.. Without knowing the actual events of those encounters, or the Consortium's reasons.
Knowing that losing the Consortium's aid would make their fights against the Naval Forces significantly more difficult, especially where Kusari's Destroyers were involved, Zetsumai finally moved towards a direct confrontation with the Elders. She knew such a situation would arise eventually, so she thought it best to do so when she would have the Consortium's support on her own side.
Towards that effect, Zetsumai made a message to all the Chrysanthemums that Consortium ships would be granted full access to base their ships aboard Battleship Matsuda and that Kiretsu and any other Chrysanthemums willing to help them, would aid any Consortium ships attacked without cause by any other Chrysanthemums.
Her declaration caused a large disturbance within the Chrysanthemums, and many Elders called for Kiretsu's banishment as well and to declare them enemies of the Elders and all who served them. However, the Chrysanthemum's military director, Ai Takeda was able to cool down the situation and stop such a situation from occurring.
One Elder, ironically a young one, who's anger at Zetsumai had reached its breaking point formed a wing separate from the Chrysanthemum's main body, calling themselves the 'Guards'. The Guards were not created solely to go after the Kiretsu Squadron, but to operate differently from the ordinary squadrons, for the Elder disagreed with many of their ways. Zetsumai was actually pleased with the outcome, even though the Guards often attempted to cause Kiretsu problems, for it eroded the Elder's power even further and created another division within their ranks that she could use.
However, there was one issue that they caused that was problematic.. That being, trying to start a fight between the Chrysanthemums and Kiretsu, as well as trying to order around Zetsumai and her pilots after she had presented the Elders with a declaration of Kiretsu's independence from the Elders. After nearly beginning a battle with Kiretsu, Ai Takeda again stepped in and ordered the Guards to back down and cease trying to exert control over the Kiretsu Sentai Dageki.
With that act, Ai Takeda inadvertently granted Kiretsu full independence from the Elders and established them as their own, separate, power within the Golden Chrysanthemums. One with it's own political power on par with the Elders and with influence on the Chrysanthemum's dealings with other organizations and factions.
Along with being two separate entities within the Chrysanthemum cause, Kiretsu and the main body operated in vastly different ways, and with vastly different diplomacy. As these differences grew further and further apart, brief sporadic fighting has occurred between the two different groups.
Past
Throughout the last few decades, the Golden Chrysanthemums had been changing their targets from Samura to the Kusari State Police and Naval Forces in more of a militaristic revolution. The Kiretsu squadron had separated itself from this warlike strategy and reverted back to the original tactic of suppressing Samura. Leaving the Naval Forces to exhaust themselves against the Bretonians, Kiretsu focused itself on striking Samura whenever and wherever it can in an attempt to bankrupt the corporation, or at the very least hurt it to the point where Kishiro would surpass it politically and financially.
Kishiro, being a more liberal-thinking corporation focusing more on technological advancement than industrial processing, was largely left alone. Much of this was due to the reasoning that Kishiro, unlike Samura, may be more open-minded to the concept of woman's rights. Towards this there had been advances made towards Kishiro to use their political power to take the Chrysanthemum's case to the government diplomatically, while the Chrysanthemums themselves continued a militant revolution.
In addition to a reversion to a terrorist action against Samura, Kiretsu had also spent considerable effort and expense in stemming the flow of Artifacts into Kusari by attacking any and all Hogosha transports they could find. As well as attacking any Corsair ships found trying to enter Kusari or deliver Artifacts to the Hogosha. Kiretsu did this not only to break the Hogosha's hold on the black market and thereby deprive them of their political power, but to also ingratiate themselves with the Gas Miners Guild, who were once accomplices in the Artifacts trade before being betrayed by the Hogosha.
Due to the Hogosha's traditionalist ways, control of the black market, and political power, Kiretsu had attempted to befriend the Junkers and help them in invading Hogosha's territory and compete for control of the black market. The Junkers, in addition to being liberalists, are also instrumental in the supply and distribution of Cardamine. Their entry into the Kusari black market was an attempt to further the spread of Cardamine among Kusari's younger, more liberal, population. With the younger generation addicted to Cardamine, it was suspected that they would be more easy to control, as well as provide the Outcasts and Golden Chrysanthemums with further recruits.
To further this goal, Kiretsu commissioned transports, bought from the Outcasts, to collect Cardamine directly from Malta and return them to Battleship Matsuda, their headquarters, before being distributed to Roppongi and Furyoku Station where it could be taken to other Kusari stations and planets hidden aboard lawfully-aligned Interspace transports. After Zetsumai Keisotsu's acquisition of a Cardamine plantation on Malta, the Kiretsu made Cardamine smuggling a high priority and their deliveries increased tenfold. Because of access to their own supply of Cardamine, the smuggling offered a high amount of funding and much of Battleship Matsuda's supply was Cardamine grown on the Keisotsu Plantation.
Due to this and other events, relations between Zetsumai, and the Kiretsu by extension, and the Outcasts strengthened. At the same time and due to many and varied reasons, the Kiretsu's relations with the Blood Dragons dropped. Though maintaining the Chrysanthemum's alliance with both, Kiretsu worked more closely with the Outcasts than the Blood Dragons.
Roughly around 812 A.S. an organization that referred to itself as the Consortium began to be seen more and more around Kusari. By the time war broke out between Kusari and Bretonia in 813 A.S., the Consortium was a well-known organization to the Golden Chrysanthemums. Utilizing Outcast fighters, bombers, and destroyers, they began making strikes against the Kusari Naval Forces. The Consortium asked, and were granted, access to Ainu Depot by the the Golden Chrysanthemum's elders. The Consortium eventually came under the influence of Zetsumai Keisotsu who used their destroyers to intercept any Kusari capital ships that attacked Kiretsu ships when out interdicting Samura's commerce, until the two groups split from each other and became hostile a year later.
The following few years saw Kiretsu heavily active and involved with the Okinawa system. Due to political reasons and the fact that the Gas Miners Guild is in control of the system, the roles of the Kusari unlawfuls has reversed within the system. The Chrysanthemums and Blood Dragons have become semi-lawful with the Hogosha and Farmers Alliance being outlaws. Because of their agreements with the Gas Miners Guild, and Interspace Commerce, the running the system, the Kiretsu have waged a war against the Hogosha and Naval Forces in Okinawa, in an effort to stop both from entering the system and keep the Kusari Government from trying to take sovereignty of Okinawa away from the Gas Miners Guild.
Present
During the years of 818 and 819 A.S., Kiretsu's practices began to take much more radical directions. As Kiretsu's operating methods, and those of the Elders', split further and further apart, so did the relationship between them. Originally the conflict was purely political and diplomatic, then full hostilities broke out between the two Chrysanthemum groups in the early months of 819 A.S., and has continued with no indication of ending soon.
It was also during this time that Kiretsu's goals began to gravitate more towards combating Samura and the Hogosha, than fighting for womens' rights. The latter goal being put at a lower priority than Samura's destruction. Along with this, Kiretsu began widening its targets among all corporate ships that came into Kusari space, a result of Kishiro's uncooperative stance towards the Chrysanthemum cause. Kiretsu ships have been seen regularly entering the Sigmas and Taus to attack shipping in those areas in addition to Kusari's core space, and incidents have even began to occur as far as Rheinland's Frankfurt system. Due to the rising trade between Rheinland and Kusari, and the widely-held belief that Sirius' megacorporations were the sources of much of the galaxy's conflicts, attacks on Rheinland corporate ships, and within Rheinland itself, have been rapidly becoming a new part of Kiretsu's Modus Operandi.
Ironically, despite the inter-faction conflict among the Chrysanthemums, Kiretsu's relationship with the Blood Dragons has been getting stronger then it ever was before. Joint operations between the two groups have become far more common, and both factions' diplomacy has been influenced by the other; Kiretsu getting very friendly with the Gas Miners Guild, and less with the Outcasts, and the Blood Dragons becoming more tolerant of foreigners such as the Bretonians.
After the acquisition of two transports from the Outcasts, and a further two from the Junkers, Kiretsu has made expansion of its economic capabilities a top priority, and new transports have begun to appear with regularity, forming an entire new section of the organization focused on smuggling and supplies to the bases of Kiretsu's diplomatic friends. Smuggling runs to Liberty Rogue and Hacker bases are a common occurrence, as are supply runs to Bretonia for the Matsuda and Blood Dragon bases in Kusari.
Kiretsu has begun forming a division akin to the Hogosha and Junkers of Sirius. Specializing in the black markets and in supplying criminal bases, Kiretsu has been reshaping itself from an autonomous combat squadron into a syndicate. The Kiretsu Shinjiketo.
Kiretsu Sentai Dageki
Kiretsu Sentai Dageki (Kiretsu Strike Squadron) is the main combat force of Kiretsu. The squadron, as its name suggests, uses guerrilla warfare and quick strikes to take out targets, then get out of the conflict zone before it can be intercepted by military or police forces. The Sentai Dageki is also used for escorting Kiretsu transports and smugglers, as well as creating distractions to make their deliveries go unnoticed.
Kiretsu Shinjiketo
Kiretsu Shinjiketo (Kiretsu Syndicate) is the overall name for the organization, as well as the main smuggling division of Kiretsu. The Syndicate focuses on supplying the bases of the Kiretsu and its allies, as well as fulfilling supply and smuggling contracts for others. The Shinjiketo prioritizes profit above all else. That profit is used to further expand the Shinjiketo, and to fund the Sentai Dageki's activities in Kusari, Rheinland, and elsewhere.
