I have been taking some French classes as of late, and while I am not spectacular with the language, I do know enough to contribute some stuff here that you can use to help spice up your RP in Gallia. This will be a quick and simple guide to some basic words, phrases, and rules that can use to add a bit of French flair to your dialog.
A very important thing to know about the French language is that it actually varies slightly depending on who, and what setting you are talking to someone in. These basic divisions are, in layman's terms formal and informal (soutenu/familier). Formal speech is reserved for people you respect more, people you want to be polite to, or people above you/are in a position of authority. Familiar speech is used for talking to friends or colleagues, people you know well and can be relaxed around. Your first thought might be that we don't do that in English, but we do. Consider how you change your speech if you are say talking to your roommate or talking to a department head. But how do we tell what situation is what in French? Very simply, the sentence wording changes slightly.
S'il te plaÃt. (Please; if it pleases you) The 'te' here for instance is a sign of an informal sentence. S'il vous plaÃt. (Please; if it pleases you, sir) And the 'vous' here is a sign of more formal speech.
Specific examples will follow in the phrases section. But the easiest way to tell or show formal or informal speech is the use of words like te/tu compared to vou/vous. Again specifics will follow. But this is something to take into account if you are talking to'¦ a wingman, a superior officer, a civilian, a pirate, your boss, etc.
Bounjour (Hello; good day) Bounjour, monsieur (Hello, sir. All formal greetings include a title.) Bonsoir (Good evening) Salut (Hello) Au revoir (Good bye) à bientôt (See you soon) Adieu (Farewell)
Je ne comprends pas. (I do not understand.) Je ne sais pas! (I don't know!) Qu'est-ce que c'est? (What is that?) Pourquoi? (Why?) Venez m'aider! (Come help me!) Arrêt! (Stop!) Allez! (Go!) Allons-y! (Let's go!) Bien fait! (Well done!) Mon Dieu! (My God!) (This may or may not be considered a cuss on the server, I am unsure) Mon ami! (My Friend!)
So there you have it, a quick collection of phrases and a little lesson on formality. I may update this in the future as I get more phrases I think can be useful in a pinch. This is nothing too fancy but have fun with it. And please do not go overboard, please respect rule 3.2 (All messages in system chat must be in understandable English). Keep that in mind, use the French sparingly, make sure people still know what you are saying.
