I was just wondering why the transports are unable to mount fighter weaponry as they used to.
Unless it's another transport, most transports won't stand a chance against any type of ships out there.
I'll give you an example. I've got this CAU8 Raba. I used to have Salamancas and tizonas mounted on it. Back then I could hold my own against up to 3 fighters or maybe 2 bombers and get to safety, and even deliver quite a bit of damage in return.
Now you may be thinking that that is a bit overpowered for a transport, but keep in mind that the Raba was actually designed to be a warship.
This time around I got killed by one lone fighter. Yep. A single VHF killed my CAU8 Raba. It took a while and I managed to fly quite a distance, (Cadiz, y u so far away? Q_Q)
but he did it.
So yeah. Are transports supposed to be this weak, or do I simply suck?
First, I *believe* the fighter guns were removed because the energy consumption is too low. The damage-to-power ratios are completely different for snubs, transports, and caps, and the transport shield generators are a big factor in this equation. Using fighter guns on a transport makes the equation not work. You could basically fire a full complement of PGs even with the power core almost bottomed out and the shield generator running, which was not how the ships were intended to be balanced. The energy requirement on the Type-4 turrets was lowered a bit to make them more usable, but they are still greedy in comparison to the fighter turrets.
The big problem with transport turrets is that the accuracy sucks. The hard-points suck, the munition speed is too slow to hit a moving target over any significant distance, and the refire rates limit the amount of feedback you get from actually hitting the target. At least with fighter turrest you could spray at the enemy to keep them from closing in on you. Even now with Nova from 2k that wouldn't help much anyway.
Just focus on getting away. You will lose every fight you stick around for.
A single snub, fighter or bomber alike, stand no chance against medium/small transport (firefly, Big Dragon, BWT and such) that equipped with Type-4's and is using turret steer/zoom. It's so easy to fight off snubs with that combination that it's almost no fun anymore to do that.
True, that comes at a price - with type-4s you are quite defenseless against other transports and GBs. But from those it's easier to get away, anyway.
Its because the dev team doesent want to balance transports as able to survive a fight. The fighter turret additions were too effective. (which is a farce considering their range)

You let it sound like the dev team would be actively balancing transports to have -no- chance of survival. Point is, a medium transport with full PG is overpowered and doesn't fit the role of a transport (from the view of the devs).
Also, the new Type 4's are a good alternative to the fighter guns.
I had no idea that the type 4 had their energy consumption reduced. Now you can actually use them without having the entire powerplant drained instantly. While not as powerful as the fighter turrets it certainly goes a long way.
All I needed was something to keep snubs at bay, as I suspect that a gunboat might be easier to get away from.
Type-4 still use a lot, especially when the shield generator drops your available power. Good test is use /shields command to lower your shield, then use it again to bring them back on. While the generator is charging, see how many weapons you can fire. It'll be the same when you're taking fire and the shield generator is trying to recharge. You might need to break them into weapon groups in order to have enough power.

Snubs can be managed. Gunboats are death with type-4.
