Hah. Sad thing in Freelancer any Hunter can pew almost anyone. He just must say: you have bounty on you and I want it. no way ingame to prove you dont have bounty, and even after it there is almost no chance to find name of your ship in all Bounty lists. so ye - Freelancer =/= realism
Well if bounty hunters in real life go after the wrong person they get in all kinds of trouble.
In FL if a bounty hunter goes after the wrong person (a non-bountied ship) they get sanctioned for PVP abuse, because there is no reason for them to shoot.
Blanket bounties luckily cover most common common criminals now, so such sanctions are rather rare. But still very possible.

You can get sanctioned if you just pew without a valid bounty. Pirates can just make a retarded demand and then kill a trader. boils down to the same thing.
Funny thing is, I did almost blow up a trader who was hauling contraband and refused to drop it... Turns out it was legal in liberty. may have been Gaian wildlife. also a whoops moment.
Last line in the article - "Felons need not apply." - shows that Disco =/= Real life. How many hunters in Disco have as their history a criminal background?
