One of my characters has a couple of ships and is about to add to the collection.
From an RP perspective, it makes no sense that he has to "rediscover" sectors he's already visited in another ship. In real life (yes, I know it isn't), he'd simply download the map from one ship and upload it to another.
Would it be possible to create a command whereby navmaps could be copied between ships?
If the command allowed for a password and maximum number of copies, this would also allow the commercial selling of navmaps within the community. At a push, it may well give those unhappy with new cloaking restrictions a new raison d'etre - explorer.
I had always assumed that the game engine was too restrictive to make this possible.
If not, though, this would be a brilliant feature. Could even have downloading the nav map require a small (1 - 2m) credit fee, some portion of which would go to the account the navmap is obtained from. Oh, the possibilities . . .
Technically speaking, copying the navmap data from one char to another is possible.
However, whether or not it'd be doable through a FLHook command and if so how much coding would it take is beyond me. One thing to consider though, is admins' and devs' stance toward the whole idea. Having the ability to move the map from one char to another would mean people can just go around mapping every base and system on one char, and then transferring it to rest of their chars, or even in a long run, people just buying the full map over the market once and then starting to share/sell it themselves after copying it to the rest of their chars.
I had to spend the time to fully map 4 of my chars back in 4.85, and it generated a lot of activity for those characters, as well as dragging them into a lot of player interactions that I usually would not have gotten into. Based on the general standards of the community, that's considered a good factor and having the ability to duplicate navmaps would directly effect this aspect of gameplay, so it's understandable if some people consider it unhealthy for the gameplay of the server. Also, from a roleplaying point of view, there are some areas that certain chars should not even have the knowledge of, and even though it might seem a bit too far fetched, but some people may not approve of this feature as it can give (Just tossing an example here) an Outcast character the full map of Corsair guard systems.
To generalize the situation, as this subject has been brought up before, there are simply too many varied opinions on the matter to be able to come to a solid conclusion and act accordingly, and on top of that, even if the admins and devs decide to implement this feature, it won't be anywhere near the top of their priority list, so all around there's a really small chance that it'd be happening anywhere in my playtime.
Duplication i think is also abusive in a way. 1 sells his map to another and everyone has it. also if partial addons would be possible too you just do a /restart and add it to 1 character till you have almost all.
