Hello hello Discovery! I'm a new player when it comes down to Freelancer's multiplayer, but a childhood Freelancer player and moderate-time Discovery SP player. Eager to see real people in the world, and moderately terrified to consider seeing my first real-human trade lane disruption. Oh, and I'm planning to join the official Discovery RP 24/7 server.
After deliberating with myself and the RP rules about a couple different roles (Specific trading companies, some Rheinland factions, and even considering rogue/hostile factions), I decided to sit in the Civilian role, aspire to attain a Spatial or perhaps a Crow for some slippery dogfighting, and hoping to reside somewhat casually in the universe. ..But of course, if the rules demand it, I can adapt.
I've always been a missions kind of guy, but I learned that's not a good means of money in Discovery. I've already learned about the Ralston Ice Field in Pennsylvania for good money, but if there's any other recommendations for good money early, I'm all ears.
( PS tell me if I'm doing something wrong, only way I'll learn is if I'm informed. )
I am trying to figure out what exactly I should put here.
Long-time childhood Freelancer player, played Discovery SP for a long time, finally decided to join the MP for serious.
InRP: Bastian Gereon, an 18-year-old young Rheinland foreigner in Liberty, having moved at an early age for reasons unknown to him. Left Planet Erie as soon as he was a legal adult, always desiring to explore space and see the stars. Currently a Civilian, having made a mere few million in a rusting ancient Rhino.
OOC: Still yet to have any major interaction with players, probably for the best, God knows what I'd do at first.

Seeing as you mentioned Rheinland couple of times you might want to consider about applying for ALG. We aim to be as new user friendly possible, we can help you out with mentioning trade-routes that suit ALG RP, or lend you one of the shared freighters/transports for making some money on your own and whilst flying with a fun group of people.
Interested? Recruitment link is in my signature.
And, lets not forget, welcome to Discovery! Enjoy your stay.
An excellent choice sir, shipping is the best way to make fast cash. But what to ship? Raw ore is typically the most valualble commodity for shipping, and many types in various systems are available. The IMG, and my own mining group 'Alamo Mining Fleet', offer mining and escort services at a very reasonable rate, and cost is always negotiable. If you get yourself a good transport, contact any AMF│ ships for information on filling orders for raw ore. We are based in the Taus, if you make your way to Barrier Nebula, you can find us there! We would be willing to fill your ship and even escort you to the best destination for the goods!
Well as the people above me have made note of, there are lots of corporations to sign up with and earn money with them. There are some lucrative trade routes that exist, a simple one being boron from Planet Pittsburgh and selling it in New London...though I forget where I admit. You can get luxury food on Cambridge which sells for a lot back in New York, though I am sure there is some resource you can buy and sell directly on Cambridge instead.
If you can find a trader willing to cooperate you can ask them to hire you as a scout, flying in front of them to see if there are any pirates. No combat is involved and you get to learn their routes. The only downside is that you need to get the trader to do business with you, and some are more cooperative than others!
I'm not sure if it's normal to reply to my own welcome thread, buuuuuuuuuuuut bugger it.

Much as I respect waste disposal flyers and how important their job is, I'm not sure if that's exactly what I'm looking for. Originally speaking I investigated operating as a Rheinland Police official, but given I'm not used to a strict operational code in Freelancer, I aired against it for safety.
I also mentioned Rheinland a couple times because I am of German descent, and really love how Rheinland looks, feels, and operates in Freelancer (though I confess they need to leave their green-metal-plated military style for their ships more often), and to try to give my character a bit of extra depth that didn't really need to be there. I'll consider operating for ALG, but for the moment I still need to get a good bearing on the universe.

Another invitation to another mining guild. I'm not sure if I should see it as the community extending open arms to new people, or mining guilds are going out of style.
I do confess that a position at the IMG would be interesting. Their place in the galaxy gets them at least neutral if not cozy with a number of different factions. Also glad to see you guys officially support the entire Sirius Civilian line of ships, as they tend to be my favorite line. That and the IMG are naturally loose and independent, something I'm more than happy to see given I occasionally do things in Freelancer purely on whims.
Cool to see you guys based in the Taus, but I personally would love to chill around Freeport 4 more than any place else. Magellan was an absurdly pretty system to me.

True true, some of the early routes are respectable in cash flow. I don't know, Helium at 1,100 a pop, carting 200 back in my Rhino and only having to travel, eh 150k or so for the entire thing is reasonable enough to me. Currently worried I'll hit Rank 30 too quickly though, from what I understand Rank 30 is when your scrublord-PvP-free-pass-card loses it's value. But hey, it's friggin' space. I should expect to get hassled or even killed a couple times in the long run.

Aside from this, if you ever need help around here feel free to ask me or anyone else.
Danke. I suppose all I can ask (OOC of course) is that is it normal for Level 51 Nomads to be hovering high above stations in Pennsylvania surveying the new blood, or was I secretly being filmed on a Freelancer-version of Fear Factor, because I confess I've never spent so much afterburner and cruise fuel leaving the area the first two times.

The nomad encounter (if i get it right) was more of a random one. I assume he was merely attempting to have fun somehow, so i hope you both had.
Also when you said "150k" i assume you meant only 15k... Otherwise it would've been a very long trip.
On another matter: The level of your character is basically increased by the ship's value or the credits you have. Technically, when you reach a certain amount of money your level grows and perhaps you'll reach 30 soon enough, but frankly: after you get the hang of things all your characters will be over 30 all the time, it's part of the game. Also, don't be afraid of PvP... after all it's another side of the RP and it can be done in a lot of ways. (Or if you do it right, it can be avoided in many ways...)
Good to see you're having a nice start. Keep it up and hopefully you'll get into some major player interactions soon.

But if you think I meant cash, no. 200+ Helium at 1,100 a pop is a respectable 220k, so..

Well i've seen myself flying over 300k in this game so i'd say the distances here vary from tiny to insanely long. But this is a closed matter.
Regarding your PvP encounters - yeah, you'll get better so don't worry too much. Even losing can be fun. (Though you should note: NPCs on Disco DO use nanobots/bats... - side-note: you shouldn't call them AIs since around here there is an AI ID which can be used by players and you should not confuse the two.)
