i know a little of the coding of freelancer (having tweaked a different mod ,for SP purposes only mind you).
the raw basis of the coding for turrets comes down to:
a hardpoint, which corresponds with an equipment slot
and a piece in the coding of a ship which says:
hp_type = hp_turret_special_10, HpTurret01
hp_type = hp_turret_special_9, HpTurret01
hp_type = hp_turret_special_8, HpTurret01
hp_type = hp_turret_special_7, HpTurret01
hp_type = hp_turret_special_6, HpTurret01
hp_type = hp_turret_special_5, HpTurret01
hp_type = hp_turret_special_4, HpTurret01
hp_type = hp_turret_special_3, HpTurret01
hp_type = hp_turret_special_2, HpTurret01
hp_type = hp_turret_special_1, HpTurret01
in short, what "type" of turret (in this case, works the same for guns/torps/CMs and all) and to what hardpoint this can be mounted to.
(note: this was copied from a different file then for discovery, hence lvl1-10)
i have no idea what would happen if, say, you removed the lvl 5 from the list. but i suppose it would mean it could mount lvl 1-4,6-10. however it might as wel say "ion storm" like hell. nor do i know what would happen if you added lvl 11, i suppose however that you cant. since the developers did not go on to make lvl 14 shields (transports, gunboats, cruisers and battleships) and it is only logical to believe that they did try. if only because the rest of this mod is pure genius.
please note that i only did a few "tweaks" and therefore have no real knowledge of the coding involved with making this "happen". for all i know they could have changed this too for discovery.
you could make a whole nother class of ships, like they did with SW. then make it a weapon specific to that class.

I'm not sure that's possible jazz. There are only three types of ship in this mod: light fighters, heavy fighters, and freighters - according to the code. Bombers and VHF's are just heavy fighters with modified stats. Transports, gunboats, cruisers, battlecruisers, and battleships are just freighters with modified stats.
just put the energy usage of the weapon higher than any gun, and the energy of the ship higher so it can use the weapon then nothing apart from the repair ship can use the repair gun?
