I'm not sure if anyone else has tried this before but since a friend and I have Macs (an iMac for me and a Mac Book Pro for my friend) we have tried running Freelancer under VM-Ware Fusion. A screenshot if it can be seen here.
Although Freelancer does not currently work under VM-Ware Fusion 1.1, it works nicely under the new beta 2.0 (which has better shader and graphics support). However, there are a few problems with it. One such problem (which only happens on the Mac Book) is that the mouse is incredibly sensitive, as in at zero sensitivity the mouse is still very hard to use. Also the mouse moves as if it were on a grid (possibly because of the game's mouse is being emulated over the VM's).
Other than that FL runs fairly smoothly on VM-Ware, but not quite as smooth as Boot Camp. If anyone has any ideas about how to fix the mouse sensitivity problem (other than adjusting the sensitivity on the Mac or in FL) then feel free to post it.
you are saying you can run FL under a virtual machine in a Mac or a PC
VM Ware Fusion-- is called fusion because it lets you run high graphics games in a virtual machine..?
Cider and Boot Camp - the same?..
(oh wait -- all of the above are only for Mac right..?)
if the above is true then its pretty amazing.. i always thought high gfx games had trouble running under a VM. anyone here running FL fully under a VM on a pc..
(if FL runs ok under a VM for mac then it should certainly run ok under a VM for PC)

Hmmm, I'm not sure what running FL on VM-Ware Server/Worksation Edtion (I think are the PC versions) would be like. But my guess is that A) FL won't recognize the emulated graphics card and B) the emulated graphics card does not have 3D accelerated graphics so it will either not work or not work at all.
As for Cider and Boot Camp, Cider is (from looking over their site) an application for Mac OS that emulates games, however, unlike VM-Ware Fusion, it emulates just the game and not both the operating system (Windows) and the game (Freelancer).
Boot Camp on the other hand is a utility that is built into Mac OS X (Leopard) that emulates Windows (and other 32 and I think 64 bit operating systems if you mess around with it enough). However, unlike VM-Ware Boot Camp allows the emulated operating system to directly interface with the Mac's hardware which gives it an edge over trying to play games on VM-Ware Fusion.
Lastly, ya you're right about GFX games (or any games) having trouble running in an emulated environment (operating system). Although Freelancer is pretty light on resources it still doesn't run perfectly (like it would on my PC or Boot Camp). Its still fun to mess around with though.
EDIT: I looked a at Cider a little more closely and it turns out it is a technology that is built into games (as in the compile the game with Cider in its source).
So I guess unless one of us can get our hands on FL's source code, Cider is our of the question).
