trust me, i speak from experience, not everyone watches the chat screen. that and you'd have to constantly be watching it to be able to avoid hostiles.
also one thing to remember is that while the traders are watching the chat screen so too are the pirates.....whom could be on another character just waiting for someone to jump into their system. at which point they log onto their pirate and getcha.
