In case your Firefox keeps crashing (after the damn beta version update) or you need some plugins to work again you can get an older version here - http://www.oldapps.com/ - since it doesn't allow a rollback. If you uninstall and reinstall an older version it should save your bookmarks. If you uninstall the Mozilla maintenance service it won't keep pestering you to update. They have an awesome archive of with older versions of apps.

If you're planning to download large files or if you're having trouble with corrupt downloads of the new update or just in general try Free Download Manager - http://f0.freedownloadmanager.org/fdminst.exe . Handy little app but the guys were nice enough to give us a torrent as well so you can use that too.

My copy of Mirefox isn't completely crashing (and I used it to post this), but anytime that I click on a link to download anything (4.88.1, either torrent version or regular version, or the Free Download Manager link in your post), Direfox opens another tab for a split second, then closes that tab and doesn't download anything. I'm not using Internet Exploder because I closed the list of bookmarks on the left side (so I could see a particularly wide page on the forums) and haven't been able to access my bookmarks since then. Also, Exploder takes forever to start up because it opens three tabs at the same time, all three of which want to show me news videos that I don't need -- Chrome does the same thing. Firefox is the only browser I have which opens quickly and lets me have access to my bookmarks, but it isn't letting me download anything.

Edit: I'm using Norton AntiVirus -- it could've blocked my downloads, but it has never done that before, so I don't know why I can't download anything right now.

Thanks for trying, evanz, but my problems on my laptop are well beyond my abilities to fix.

Here is what I tried: when I connected to the link you gave me, there was a warning at the top of the page which said "Looks like you’re using an older version of Firefox." Next to the warning was a button labelled "Update to stay fast and safe." Clicking on that button had no effect.

Following the instructions for resetting Firefox didn't work because the Reset button that is supposed to be on the Troubleshooting Information page isn't there -- I can't push the Reset button if it doesn't exist.

Clicking on the Refresh Firefox button also had no effect.

I've got a friend who is a computer professional -- he has fixed my computers many times over the years. I guess it is time for me to visit him again (he lives an hour's drive away). Meanwhile, as far as playing Discovery mod, my laptop is about as useful as a brick.

Or install µTorrent and open the torrent link directly in µTorrent.

evanz: When I started up my laptop again a few hours ago, Firefox finally updated and is working correctly now -- I was able to download 4.88.1 and I've already played one of my characters on the GC server without a problem. Apparently, the "Update to stay fast and safe" message really was from Mozilla. Anyway, thanks for your help.

Sir_Now: Alley posted Security Warning: uTorrent about four hours after your post.
