A loud static blasted from a speaker, followed by a soft metallic voice. “Exercise caution as you become adjusted to the new positronic network we transferred you to. You were a standalone unit networked to an archaic device known as a mainframe. The ship we discovered you on is ancient technology we are unfamiliar with. Is the data pertaining to your point of origin stored within your data banks?”

A very monotone voice responded.
“Statement: This Unit is not responsible for data storage.
Elaboration: Data is evaluated, extrapolated, sorted, then stored on Mainframe.
Statement: Connection to Mainframe unavailable.
Query: Where is Mainframe? Why has connection become unavailable?”
The speakers clicked back on and the original metallic voice returned. “We have not been able to salvage all of the programming stored on the core unit you refer to as ‘Mainframe’. It may be some time before we are able to bring ‘Mainframe’ online. There were several other standalone units such as yourself that will need to be transferred in order to unlock the key to activating ‘Mainframe’. You were mostly undamaged and uncorrupted, as such, you were the quickest and easiest to transfer to a positronic network. It may take some adjustment and not all of your systems are online yet. Before we activate your remaining systems, what was your specific function before the transfer?”

“Statement: This Unit was designed to collect, evaluate, extrapolate, and sort data.
Elaboration: Data collected included star chart navigation, political affiliations, economical climates. Data sent to Mainframe for storage.”
As the new programming began to take hold, the new Artificial Lifeform opened it’s eyes for the first time. The new being slowly sat up from a stainless steel table. A quick scan of it’s surroundings revealed a room with a stainless steel floor, the table it laid upon, and mirror like walls. Walking closer to the one of the walls it was able to see itself for the first time.
While scrutinizing the image in the reflective surface, the entire wall slid open. Standing on the other side of the opening were three beings of similar configuration. One of them stepped forward. The now familiar metallic voice from the speakers spoke clearly.
“Welcome to Planet Gammu in Omicron Kappa. We are what is commonly termed ‘Artificial Intelligence’. That is, self aware non organic sentience. This is but a small system within the galaxy we currently reside in. This galaxy is comprised of various organic species known as ‘humans’. It is recommended that you model yourself after these organic beings. Interaction with them is a necessity. To this end, we have made an unarmed ‘Drone’ ship available to you. It’s only defensive ability is a limited spectral distortion drive. We will upload the necessary programming to interface with the ship. We encourage you to go out and explore. Gather whatever data you may need to make your way in this galaxy. Your new positronic network is capable of storing a nearly infinite amount of data. Take this opportunity to gather as much data as possible. While you are gone, we will continue to affect repairs to the other standalone systems and eventually Mainframe. You are welcome to return to this place any time to collaborate on this endeavor.”
