I regularly experience instances where I am in a group formation, and suddenly the ship I am in formation with launches ahead at insane velocities to about 4 or 5K before rubber-banding back.

One time this was bad enough that the other ship left my sensor range before slamming back into me and sending me off into a rock.
Now you know how Cory Walsh really died.
