She cracked a crooked smile and shook her head, her black hair reflecting the natural light of the library.

"That's its purpose. This is just files, data. A shared copy. You're not the only one, you're merely the first. If you choose to keep this for yourself, or just for your agency, all you're doing is wasting my time, not creating any measurable loss. There will be other ones who would be interested in this technology. All you'd be doing is accelerating the clock for Cryer and giving them more time to come up with their own version. And once people have their new doodad, well that's it. Because they will be reluctant to change, even if you spread the news that it can be used to restrict their freedom. Sure, some would listen to you. But most wouldn't, because people hate change."

She crossed her legs. "I'm not doing this for myself, Mr Reeves. You don't have a guarantee beyond what's on that diamond. But growing up where I did I understood that not everything you do in life should be for your personal benefit. And I will stick by that."

She'd answered him near identically to one he would have given her if their roles were reversed. Perhaps they were cut from the same cloth in a way. In either case, there was no way to know for sure what Miss Fairchild's true motives were. The only thing he could do was to ensure that from his side everything was indeed aimed at the greater good.

A fair point, pardon the pun. If that's everything I wish you well, you have my contact details if there's anything to be discussed in the future. All you need to do now is keep your eyes on the news, we both know the waves the release of this is going to cause and I'm more than certainly going to put it in the public's hands by giving it to some promising start-ups to begin production, no patent and no gimmicks. Everyone will have it and at fair prices, everyone wins, well.. except Cryer.

He almost seemed amused at the last portion of his sentence, he was never fond of the excessive greed certain corporations seemed to actively work towards and promote, it was one thing to work to provide for yourself and perhaps ones family, but in his mind you were crossing a line if you sought to bring everyone into the palm of your hand so as to benefit the few by depriving the many.

Forgive how blunt my previous question was, to trust in my line of work isn't something in common practice, as well as the fact that it's more often than not that people are working for their own agendas. I always assume the worst, a habit if anything.

He slotted the Diamond into a small device he had, which he then placed back inside one of his coat pockets, giving her another polite smile, their meeting was more or less concluded by this point, all that was left was to leave.

She stood up and shook Reeves's hand. "I'm glad you're doing the right thing, Mr Reeves. I suppose this meeting has reached its desired conclusion. Please contact me when you make any developments or should you have any issues. I hope to see you again, soon."

Her black hair and dress waved as she stepped towards the exit. Once there, she turned around again and looked at Reeves, smiling. She waved at him with her fingers and stepped outside. She couldn't help releasing a sigh of relief as she walked through the beautiful Manhattan summer to the maglev station.

I need a break from this place. I need to go back home. Back to Crete. She sensed the Professor's relief and even a slight tingle of happiness as well.

Take me somewhere nice.
