I switched over to the single game mode (New Game) and played a bit and saved my game....turned off the computer and went back to the game....The saved game wasn't there...How do you call up a saved game or do you..??

You do not. Every time you start Discovery Launcher, it deletes saves (files with *.fl extension) from
It keeps other files there though. This is what I do, to be able to play SP and save. Once I save SP game and Exit Freelancer, I zip the folder with saves. Next time I want to play, I just extract it.

You don't. Disco doesn't save in SP unfortunately - it's an issue that, as far as my understanding goes, is not solvable at present. If you want to play alone, you can though. Just set up your own private server and go ahead. It will save your progress as you play.
All you have to do is rename the folder in My Documents\my games\ Freelancer
For example I call mine "Freelancer-Disco"
Every time you launch DSace/DsLauncher it'll delete My Documents\my games\Freelancer
But it wont delete it if you called it FreelancerDisco or something. So just run the exe change the file name back to "Freelancer" and you're good. when you're done. change the name to something other than "Freelancer"
