"Bird of Prey"
I've taken an extended shoreleave to work on a personal project, need to clear my head. I cant say that Arya's 'defection' to the Legacy of Orillion has been easy on me, I lost a first officer and a friend - and for what? High command makes their decisions and sends us where they will, we never get an explanation. Sometimes I think she might have done the right thing, but it isnt in my nature to question my superiors. Arya, of course, lost her rank and honors with the black fleet, but I'm sure she's doing well for herself with the Legacy.
I guess I just need a distraction to clear my head, forget about that mess, and I think I've found just the thing. During our patrol assignment in Sigma-19, uneventful as it was, we did come across an interesting find in the Hiryu cloud: an old Zoner Osprey, significantly battle damaged but relatively intact. Of course, we scanned the wreckage and found nothing of importance at the time, but I kept seeing thinking back to that ship, and how much of a waste it was to leave it there. I contacted some old junker friends out at Trancon and sent them the coordinates we had logged for the wreckage so they could haul it back to my garage on Akabat.
Obviously I'm no starship mechanic, and I've had to reach out to friends both within and not of the Order for the knowledge to repair this ship, but working on it clears my mind... gives me a sort of zen tranquility. I was meant to fix this ship, to get it flying once more, and I intend to do just that. I have a few weeks of vacation time built up, and hopefully by the time I return to active duty I'll be flying this beauty.

Once the ship had been delivered to my workshop, the first task was to assess the condition she was in; and it wasn't what I'd hoped. Both heat sink cowlings had suffered significant damage, with the port cowling missing most of the bottom front section and the starboard cowling missing the top section. The cockpit was in relatively good shape, other than the transparisteel being shattered; luckily there was no corpse waiting for me, must've been picked clean by salvagers a long time ago. No weapons or cargo were left on the ship either.
Additional damages... the ramscoop intake looks to be in good shape, but it's absolutely full of gunk from the alien organisms living in the Hiryu cloud. It'll take some heavy cleaning to get it back to anything resembling 'new'. The reactor - taking up at least half of the ship's length - is structurally intact, but must have overloaded. All of the wiring and control systems are fried, and I doubt it will ever run again. Good news is, if I can gut it, I can keep the outer reactor shell and just replace the internals, which might turn out to be a good thing since I'll have free choice of what kind of power source I want to use. The Zoner deuterium reactors were good, but I'm thinking I might go with a MOX reactor of some type, a little more crude but easier to work with and with much more reliable power output.
The main thruster assembly is also shot, I think this thing might've taken a missile or two up the tailpipe before it stopped kicking, I'm going to have to cut everything out and install an entirely new engine system. That'll probably be the most expensive part of this restoration, but every combat pilot knows you have to have an engine you can rely on.
Lastly... weaponry - nothing was left, must've been scavengers but that, too, gives me a clean slate. I've used a lot of guns in the past decade of flying fighters for the Order, I'll probably look for some particle or laser cannons for the main guns, and compliment them with good old debilitators. Nice thing about these zoner Ospreys - that oversized power plant can support a lot of equipment, it's just a matter of finding what works.

I've sent a request to the Zoners seeing if they can provide original blueprints for this particular ship model, having access to those would help greatly in repairs. In the meantime, I'm awaiting a shipment of materials from the junkers at Tarancon to rebuild the most damaged components. I've also put in a request to our allies in the Bundschuh to see about acquiring a Rheinland MOX reactor and fusion engine.
