Military Record
Maria Wilhelm joined the Liberty Navy at the young age of 17, fresh out of boarding school and eager to serve she wished to avoid the draft that had been put in place so she could have her choice of service during the war that sparked against Rheinland and Liberty in 817 A.S. There were no heroics, no feats of strength, no cliche top of the class for her, she only expended the energy she needed to get by and pass her military training. After her training she assigned to the Vanguard tasked with repelling the Rheinland invaders in the heart of Texas, canon fodder essentially. Throughout the many invasions and dog fights deep within Texas and far away from any support, Wilhelm developed quite the knack for snubcraft combat. Only above average at best she kept her wits and avoided engagements with the known Rheinland aces at all cost, often leading her wing away instead of engaging in an outright brawl she knew they couldn't win.
Wilhelm eventually volunteered for the Expeditionary Wing as it was known, nearly everyone in the Navy knew it as a sure death sentence, while the LSF had the most capable operatives in Liberty, they couldn't constantly babysit the Navy, they had their own operations deep behind enemy lines, the Expeditionary Wing was more like a sensor array for the Naval Forces of Liberty, many of their wrecked ships still litter the four systems today, their task was to stay entrenched in hidden positions and report enemy fleet movement and activity. She was assigned to Bering, a hellhole in its own right with all the pirates lurking about from the Freeport and adjacent Hudson system in addition to all the Rheinland operatives milling about to the south and west. Among those assigned alongside her was the LNG-Coblenz, a Defiant class gunship and Expeditionary Officer Riker, who favored the Guardian just as Wilhelm did, he however swore by the dread hammers that struck the bell, and she the lavablades.
A week into the operation their position had been discovered by a Valkyrie patrol wing, Riker and Wilhelm were able to dispatch them, though it wouldn't be long before a another wing arrived to take down the LNG-Coblenz, they chose to retreat despite knowing they wouldn't get far. Soon the dreaded sounds of the screeching Rheinland MOX engines were upon them, the Mighty Fafnir in the distance, phantom interceptor craft nipping at their heels, Riker and Wilhelm exhausted their countermeasures in attempt to keep the Coblenz in cruise, but it wouldn't be long before the Fafnirs caught up with the Gunship despite their efforts. Riker being the wiser of the two naval pilots sent out a distress signal despite the dangers of it being intercepted, even over a secure commlink, the roaring emerald antimatter nearly blinded Wilhelm as it struck the Coblenz, caught in open conflict the Coblenz took evasive maneuvers, engaging in combat to defend itself and its escort. Wilhelm and Riker were quickly assailed by a multitude of phantom fightercraft, the bombers tearing the Coblenz to pieces, the deafening concussive sounds of the antimatter, the blinding light and the explosions, obliterated rock and torn off wings of Wilhelm's fighter lead to a serious case of Shell Shock later in her life. First Riker went down, the 3 phantoms overwhelming him before turning their weaponry upon Wilhelm who had downed 2 out of the 4 assailing her, in the chaos of it all she initiated her self destruct protocol, emptying her mine bay as she crashed into one of the phantoms, taking another 4 with her, crippling the last. Left adrift in the cold void of Bering, she was forced to watch as the remaining bombers struck the command deck, flames shooting outward only for the entire crew to be sucked out into space and the fires dimming as soon as the oxygen faded into the vacuum, the next few antimatter strikes tore the rest of the decks apart, leaving the Coblenz a smoldering molten wreck. An Oder class gunship arrived late to the battle to aid in sweep and retrieve alongside the Fafnir bomber wing, though their search was cut short when the response wing arrived to Riker's distress signal, the wing comprised of 3 Defiants and 2 Upholder class bombers alongside 4 Guardians, the Oder was overwhelmed by the Naval Gunships, as was expected, the Fafnir made a valiant attempt at escape, but the Guardians speed was too great and they went down just short of the Hamburg jump anomaly several kilometres off.
Wilhelm was returned to a Vanguard Battlegroup currently stationed in northern Hudson with haste, there was reports of enemy movement in northern Bering, headed their way. After Wilhelm recovered from her minor injuries she was back on the field, spending the remainder of the war fighting with Rheinland's own Vanguard over control of Atka and Liberty's border.
At the end of the war Wilhelm was assigned to the Mississippi, serving as an engineering specialist, teaching new naval pilots how to service their own ships and equipment, to lighten the load on the rest of the engineers that were constantly bustling around the battle hardened floating city. She retained her skill in a fighter long after the war, but due to nursing her Shell Shock and wounds torn by the loss of her brothers and sisters, she served peacefully aboard the Mississippi for the next decade, honing her skills in close quarters combat, planetary entry, spacewalk emergency repairs and equipment management.
Perhaps a particular deed during the war peaked their interesting, or good word from her filthy rich father, a favor, or anything else. Wilhelm had planned to retire the same month she was contacted by the LSF, a woman by the name of Eliza Crawford had shown interest in her capabilities. Naturally, still with a strong, burning sense of patriotism, a chance to join the utmost elite of the elite appealed to her sense of duty, and Wilhelm accepted the offer without hesitation. Hoping to truly make a difference now more than ever so that all the lives lost during the war hadn't been for nothing. The training was as cruel and grueling as she had expected, though Wilhelm had no desire to quit at any moment, no matter how miserable she was. Wilhelm powered through her training for the LSF, advanced boarding, close quarters combat, tracking, interrogation, ship scuttling, advanced communications (negotiation), spacewalk repairs and combat and further expansion upon her skill in snubcraft she gained during the war. The most notable thing she gained from her training was her ability to keep calm under any circumstance, something she had wrestled with since her time in the war, though it couldn't stop the nightmares she experienced, no matter how hard she tried.
