Anthem: We plow and sow and toil without rest;
We harvest and yet do not know for what.
For what we achieve with our strength,
Is taken from us and snatched away.
What the taxes still leave us for our lives,
is pressed out of us as interest rates.
And what we sell does not bring us any profits:
May the devil be a farmer still!
Das Landvolk - History
"Das Landvolk" ("The peasantry") is a nationalistic peasants group born amidst the Rheinland civil war as a reaction to the Imperial Government issued tax reform. Whilst these reforms were disadvantageous for Synth Foods and the extra tax revenue was fed into new subsidies for local farmers, several smaller farmer associations were anxious that a Federal victory may result in the return of favorable tax conditions for Synth Foods. Others were hopeful that an Imperial victory would lead to the full scale ban of Synth Foods operations from Rheinland. Unwilling to sit idly, these farmers banded together and formed the new "Das Landvolk" movement by 828 A.S. - Initially as a purely local political activist group, they held rallies on Stuttgart's surface to garner support for the Imperial forces - with relative success until the conclusion of the civil war.
In the initial years following the civil war under the new Government, Rheinland was met with tolls of war games. The subsequent social earthquakes caused by the fear for an ongoing era of economic and political instability, partially attributed to the Red Hessians continued efforts within Dresden, led to a radicalization within the peasant movement.
The subsidies introduced by the Imperials were hardly sufficient anymore and Stuttgart was clearly doomed to remain in Synth Foods iron grip for years to come. Ultimately striving to abolish the new Government - whom they branded as "traitors of the people" - and enforce the return of Planet Stuttgart to the people of Rheinland, the movement had to set its sights to the stars and the other populated Planets of Rheinland.
Through aid provided by the umbrella organization known as Neuer Weltbau Verein Stuttgart - „renewed Worldbuilder Group of Stuttgart“ or short NWVS, the modern ideological equivalent to the old Farmer union which acted as largest farmer lobby in Rheinland - "Das Landvolk" managed to reach out to their Kusari ideological brethren and acquired the fundings their domestic brothers could not spare to grant them. The fundings enabling the movement to operate in space, albeit in extremely limited scale.
By early 834 A.S., the movement acquired a handful of refurbished Gunboats from various sources and equipment handed down by the joint Farmers parent organisations, the Landwirtrechtbewegung and the Farmer Alliance. With barely trained crews, the movement is forced to "learn on the flight" and pick their targets carefully as every loss is significant for them. When in late 834 A.S. the relations between the LWB remnants and the Farmer Alliance broke down to the point the Kusari partners were expulsed from Rheinland, the movement faced imminent collapse. Only through the capture of one Hel-class cruiser through a mutiny on the Farmer Alliances side, could the fringe movement secure itself sufficient support from other LWB groups for the time being.
Despite many celebrating the begin of its spaceborne era, the movement already faces drastic shortcomings and issues requiring attention sooner than later:
The strong nationalistic identity and pro-Imperial tendency of the movement puts it at odds with the unlawful groups of Rheinland and parts of the LWB. The lack of further reaching support to the farmers of Stuttgart by the Imperial elements of the new order leaves many in doubt about the wisdom behind continued support for their ideals.
The movement was financially almost completely dependent on the foreign Farmer Alliance and their benefactor, Samura Industries. Whilst the Farmer Alliance was officially expulsed, rumors persist that Das Landvolk still remains financially intertwined with the Farmer Alliance and the Kusari corporate giant Samura.
