Once a 'vacation ship' for Ouroboros' founder placed under the ownership of Starcat Enterprises, a shell company for the movement's financing based out of Gran Canaria, the Utsunomiya is named after the Terran birthplace of Nodoka Hanamura, the once administrator of Freeport 11, who later returned to her house of Kusari to seek revenge on the Kusari state and Kishiro Technologies for wrongs committed against them and countless others as part of supposed unethical experimentation and cryostasis, along with general disgust as what has been seen as a 'de-evolution' of Kusari society and politics since the collapse of its' predecessor from Sol.
The Utsunomiya following struggles against the GMG's security forces was recalled from service with Starcat as part of a staged attack on the ship, leading to a simple changing of banner to be assigned as part of the Ouroboros' Abdicant Seraphine Carrier Battlegroup as part of a plan to divert through deep space via jump drive propulsion to arrive in the Taus for redeployment of forces in friendlier space. However, the devestating energy pulse that sent Sirius' infrastructure into the dark, first laid claim upon the flagship of the Ouroboros, resulting in a debilitating powerplant and jump drive failure, with the faction eventually moving to scuttle the Seraphine and move C3BM (Command, Control, Communications and Battle Management) functions to the Utsunomiya, even with its' lacking defensive capabilities - due to the lackluster state of the Tochigi and other ships in the battle group.
Arriving back in the Sirius Sector in 834 AS, the Utsunomiya and her battlegroup would flee once again to inverness, seeking to re-amass their forces, and aid and abet the Pennsylvania Liberation Front, whose fight resonates with the group's aspirations. The group also seems to harbor sympathies with Task Force Prometheus.
The Utsunomiya prior to her departure with the Abdicant Seraphine, underwent an extensive rapid refit, installing salvaged systems from wreckages of Libertonian, IMG and Zoner ships from across the sector to provide as much defensive and sensor intelligence capability as was possible. Utilizing what limited time was at their disposal, the Utsunomiya underwent refit while Moored to FOB Maehara, as the limited modifications to the ship afforded such changes to be made, when they would normally be done within drydock. The utilization of decent military-grade sensors afforded the Utsunomiya the ability to act as a fallback vessel in the event of the Seraphine's loss or destruction.
Featuring the same sleek configuration of the rest of the Shukensha-class liners, this ship was not built for ferrying the wealthy and influential - but quite the opposite - it is a testament to the beauty and elegance of the history of the Kusari, dating back to their predecessor's ancestral ages, millennia ago on earth. Whilst limited to anti-snubcraft self-defense provided by its' IRON HAMMER CIWS batteries, the Utsunomiya makes up for this lacking armament with a sizable hangar of snubcraft that serve in combat, logistics and intelligence roles. Shielding from Livadia Shipbuilding provides best in class protection along with 1ft of sustained CITX (Carbon-Iridium-Titanium Crossweave) Plasma-resistant armor.
Ouroboros plans to, once firmly planted again in Sirius, to begin refitting the Utsunomiya into a proper successor to the Abdicant Seraphine, converting the ship into an 'Flagship Aviation Battlecruiser',
Systems
Powerplant
--Manufactured by Samura Atomics from 819 to 828, the SD-492/A Cold Fusion Reactor serves as the beating heart of the Utsunomiya, providing 224GW of power across 330 lines ranging from 120V to 1.21MV at variable amperages. This system, originally designed for maintaining a cruiseliner, has been modified through makeshift firmware and hardware changes to provide power to the various sensors, life support, propulsion, weapons and miscelleanous systems aboard.
Hardening of the powerplant against damage was a priority as part of the late 824 refits made at Maehara, as well as ensuring that the reactor was 'battleshort-capable', affording additional power to systems in the event of an emergency, at the cost of reduced powerplant lifespan, or in the case of prolonged or extensive use, reactor damage and instability. Stowed inside the rear of the hull, ahead of the propulsion block, the Utsunomiya's powerplant is reinforced further by 8 feet of CITX armor around its' housing area, ensuring low risk of external causes of a catastrophic meltdown.
In the event of main powerplant failure, or as a battleshorting supplement, a Livadia Shipbuilding EK-33 MOX Generator is available for spin-up to provide 40GW of power from 120V to 800V at variable amperages. The generator is unable to provide power on the higher voltage lines, and as such, systems like the shield generator, anciliary propulsion systems, and subluminal cruise modes on primary propulsion systems will be rendered inoperable when acting as the sole powerplant. Limited weapon energy capacity in this state is also present, resulting in a priority on use as a way to safely move to muster stations or reach allied forces for repair support.
The redundancies in place aboard the Utsunomiya ensure that much like the Seraphine before it, in a worst case scenario, crew can evacuate and scuttle the ship without immediate LSS failure or catastrophic reactor meltdown or leakage.
-- Driving the Utsunomiya is three individual drives, of Renzu's custom-built F-110 series, with one primary EF/3 and two C/1 engines driving the ship. Built especially for the Shukensha's needs, the engines provide ample thrust and reliability, whilst retaining a surprising degree of efficiency. Housed in the stern of the ship and additionally armored against attack from the sides, the three can function independent of each other in the event of others failing or being disabled in combat. The drives are assisted by a series of various compressed oxygen RCS thrusters across the hull, affording additional manueverability. The oxygen comes by way of the onboard hydroponics systems, which are part of the greater LSS system.
--Keeping the crew alive, is a Synth Foods-Ageira CCI-4490 'Eden' Life Support Suite. Taking up part of Deck F and several blocks, the system consists of four hydroponics bays, 2 CO2 Rebreathing Converters and 4 compressed oxygen tanks carrying 1.5kpsi each, affording 1 week of auxiliary oxygen supply. Eight 1,000gal tanks, split between consumption water and waste water, also make up the system, and provide water to the ship's decks.
Food supplies are retained on Deck F as well, with approximately 4 months of supplies when rationed, at full capacity. Ouroboros nutrition doctrine prioritizes foods utilizing natural sources and non-synthetic products. However, Synth Paste is kept in stock on the ship in the cargo hold as an auxiliary ration.
Amenities aboard are similar to the baseline Shukensha model, featuring a gymnasium, pool, concourse/atrium, bar, dining hall, theaters and other similar amenities. However, for the purposes of Ouroboros, these civilian luxuries have for the most part been retrofitted to serve the purposes of the movement - theaters converted into briefing rooms, the dining hall converted into a mess hall and gathering area, the various rooms aboard converted into barracks, offices and anciliary facilities such as armories. One unique modification of the Utsunomiya, is the inclusion of an artificial onsen, located near the pool on Deck C - utilizing radiation-shielded, piping from the reactor's coolant lines, the onsen is made to be similar to Kusari and historical records of Japanese hot springs, configured for communal or gender seperated use.
The Command deck, originally configured as the First Class quarters, serves as home to the Flag Quarters for high ranking Ouroboros personnel, guest quarters for guests of the movement, and the offices of the various commands and divisions of Ouroboros, much like on the Seraphine. The bridge offers an unparalleled 180-degree view of the ship's bow. The bridge, while lacking in comparison to a dedicated capital, does not fall short of the functions needed to fulfill the Utsunomiya's role.
--Keeping the Utsunomiya's hull from taking direct attack is the same shield generator that protected many a Whale-class transport, The Livadia SKR-10 'Durandal'. Based on a charged positron field generated via a magnetic field wrapped around the perimeter of the ship, the SKR-10 provides ample defense against both kinetic and energy-based munitions for ships of the class.
Providing 24,000kJ of potential energy resistance, the SKR-10 takes an approximate 30 seconds to rebuild capacity after being drained and carries with it a 120,000kJ capacitor bank for emergency recharge.
Additionally, onboard nanobot-based DC systems afford partial healing functionality for the Utsunomiya.
-- The Utsunomiya's sensors serve as one of the largest boons over the standard model Shukensha. Utilizing radar arrays from older Sagarmatha-class battlecruisers of the IMG, namely the 'Nyantse' Integrated Sensor Suite, consisting of the IMG AN/CLI-30 'Gyantse' Quantum Actively Electronically Scanned Array Search Radar, IMG AN/CLR-33 'Shigatse' Fire Control Radar and the IMG AN/CPG-11 'Baruntse' MAWS/TAWS (Missile/Torpedo Approach Warning System) IR/SAR Sensor Array.
Operating on the Ka-band and augmented by quantum computing functionalities, the Gyantse, at least by 810s standards, is one of the best ship sensors the independent worlds can offer, providing 18KSU of range, able to track up to 9,100 individual targets. Quantum radar functionalities affords resilience against radar jamming and stealth technologies, save those provided by Electro-Optical Warfare suites. The radar can also be used in a directed long range mode, where in depth 3D SAR scans of debris fields, nebulae, planetary terrain, installations and long range vessel tracking can be utilized.
Complementing the Gyantse is the Shigatse, a short range fire control radar. Whilst search radars provide high resolution, low refresh rate data, fire control radars are the inverse - sacrificing resolution, and especially range, for a high refresh rate and the ability to lock targets. Designed to work in tandem with the Gyantse radar, the Shigatse functions in multiple modes - Track while Scan, Horizon Sectional Boresight, Vertical Scan, and Single Target Track. This system has a maximum range of 10,000 SAU, capable of providing fire control targeting for the Utsunomiya's arrays of Iron Hammer CIWS batteries.
Rounding out the suite of primary sensors, is the star of the ship's defensive functionality, the AN/CPG-11 Baruntse MAWS/TAWS Array is a series of 8 individual, strategically placed short range infrared and synthetic aperture radar sensors configured to detect launches of guided munitions from snubcraft and capitals alike with a maximum range of 8,000 SAU. Utilizing sensor fusion and AI-based data correlation, the Baruntse affords fire control teams ample time to employ defensive measures against enemy munitions.
Secondary sensors primarily consist of dual Ageira 803-CK9/A vessel approach guidance and docking radars. Originally utilized on 800s-era Liberty Battleships like the LNS Unity, the 803-CK9/A provides, when combined with a functional localizer, the ability for snubcraft to dock with, and larger vessels to moor with the Utsunomiya with ease. combined with integrated IFLOLS approach lights on the main runway deck, the CK9/A serves an invaluable role in the ship's craft-carrying functionality, ensuring safe transit of spacecraft.
--Whilst lacking in offensive capability, the Utsunomiya is by no means useless. The ship's functionality primarily supplants the Abdicant Seraphine, affording it heightened SIGINT, IMINT and MASINT capabilities, on par with 800s house military capabilities. Through the use of the series of Ageira, DSE, Samura, Livadia and even APM antenna and multi-spectral analysis systems across the ship's superstructure, the Utsunomiya is an intelligence-gathering powerhouse, capable of intercepting, decrypting, falsifying, and even jamming communications across most bands, even able to disrupt neural net functionality at a near system-level scale if so desired, albeit at the cost of exposing the ship's location through the massive amounts of radiation from the large Samura KS-110 'Shinpaku' ECM/ECCM suite antenna on the top of the ship - as well as expending a sizable degree of the ship's powerplant capacity, leaving room for little else, even when running in a battleshorted state with both main and auxiliary powerplants running.
The aforementioned Gyantse Radar, along with several high-resolution camera arrays located across the hull, provide IMINT and MASINT capabilities alongside onboard spectral analysis equipment, allowing for indepth intelligence gathering on anomalies, planets, and other objects of interest. Fusing this intelligence together, is done by way of the onboard Edgewood-class artificial intelligence, a narrow AI designed for generating human-consumable data for digest by Ouroboros' intelligence apparatus, Sanzu.
The fusion of the sensor data onboard, as well as signals intelligence, provides unparalleled datalink support functionality, allowing for a wealth of intelligence and targeting data to be shared among allied vessels in the battlespace.
--The sole defensive armament onboard the Utsunomiya, the Iron Hammer developed by CTE is standard across various transports throughout Sirius, providing a balance of firepower and speed. Configured on the Utsunomiya in a CIWS role, the Iron Hammer is a heavy hitting point defense system, capable of decimating any snubcraft or guided munitions that enter within 1000m of the ship, thanks to its' utilization of the Shigatse FCR.
Whilst the Iron Hammer is unable to put up a fight against gunboats or larger ships, the role of the Utsunomiya, at least at present, is to avoid combat wherever possible, and rely on its' fighter complement and allied assets to protect it from enemy threats.
--The onboard Electro-Optical Warfare Suite of the Utsunomiya originates from a black market acquired BDR 1st Generation Capital-grade EOW suite. Developed from Rheinland prototypes acquired by way of the Colony War in 800 AS, the BDR A-110/C provides a surprisingly competent for the modern day, electro-optical defense system. The High power utilization of the EOW suite requires the full collapse of the shield generator to charge. Once charged, the shield generator is reactivated to create a stable magnetic field around the ship, which is then in turn, augmented by the EOW suite to bend light around the ship's exterior, resulting in the Utsunomiya being rendered invisible. The resonant frequencies of the field also render even quantum radar detection impossible, resulting in the ship being mostly invisible to detection. However, ships with magnetic spectral analysis equipment can detect the presence of a field in the near area.
Accompanying the A-110/C is a BDR N-40/A1 Short-Range EOW Jammer kit. Whilst weaker than more modern hardware, the N-40/A1 allows for the Utsunomiya to passively disrupt EOW systems around it in short proximity, serving as a valuable counter-intelligence tool.
--Affording the Utsunomiya's internal superstructure protection, is an average 1 foot thick Carbon-Iridium-Titanium Crossweave (CITX) armor alloy plating. Resistant against sustained energy weapon attack, the ship is however, vulnerable to kinetic munitions such as torpedoes, Hellfire rockets, and anti-capital unguided bombs, such as the Scorcher-type Hull Penetration bomb.
--The Utsunomiya's configuration affords it a larger than normal flight deck, comparable to carriers like the Bustard. With a exposable launch bay and runway connected to the hangars in the bow, and mooring points for freighters and gunboats in a stern docking bay.
Aboard the Utsunomiya is a complement of 45 snubcraft and 4 freighters - split between 35 fighters of Falchion, Dagger and Raven's Talon types, belonging to the Ouroboros Kotetsu Wing 1st, 3rd, and 9th Escort Fighter Squadrons, and 10 Waran-class bombers, belonging to the Kotetsu Wing's 1st and 2nd Anti-Capital Bomber Squadrons.
Serving in a logistical and intelligence role are 4 Dromedary-class ships, the OCS Yuno (FT-04), OCS Iwakura (FT-05), OCS Allegiant Hope (FI-01) and OCS Somber Attendant (FI-02).
--It is clear to any keen eye, that the Utsunomiya was desperately refitted in 825 to serve the purpose of a fallback flagship vessel for Ouroboros if anything happened to the already somewhat beleaguered Abdicant Seraphine, due to issues from the lack of proper maintenance able to be done on the ship.
The Utsunomiya, now that it fufills that role, is in desperate need of refit into combat capability in order to properly fill the role of a flagship. That being said, the Utsunomiya's future is bright. Modifications to bring it up to a battlecruiser-level capital are in the early stages of being concieved, with a focus on supplementary and uprated weapons systems, modifications to the onboard Nyantse sensor suite, enlargement of the hangar bay, and VLS cells for ship-to-ship missile systems.
