The problem is right there, everyone running this game on Windows 11 seems to be dealing with FLUF and Direct3D 8 issues. This might sound stupid and hyperbolic, but eventually there'll be a point where people will have to run Linux on top of Windows, to then run Wine on top of Linux to run ancient Windows programs.

Try uninstalling it then install it again, or if there's some option that says "repair" go for that. If it still doesn't work then locate that library which should be in sysWoW64 and place it on the EXE directory. If it still doesn't work then I'm afraid I'm out of ideas, maybe you'll save headache if you rollback to Windows 10 or switch to GNU+Linux.

There's no way to repair on uninstall the direct x runtime unfortunately. Placing d3dx9_43.dll manually in the EXE directory didn't help either.

Note: mine isn't exactly a "fresh" install of Windows 11, as I was unable to install it directly, so it's more like a fresh install of Windows 10 that was then upgraded to Windows 11.

Please try this one:
https://dn721809.ca.archive.org/0/items/...202006.iso - Windows 11 can mount the ISO directly, do so and run DXSetup.exe. It's entirely offline so it should hopefully ignore any checks existing installs.

I think the note here is we definitely need to automate this process.

Right, this seems to be just the same installer as the one mentioned earlier in the thread, but packaged as an iso. Still, I ran it and it installed - again, but I'm still getting the same error when booting the game.

Thanks to Aingar we managed to get it to work. Apparently the D3DX9_43.dll in my SYSWOW64 and system32 was of different size from the one that Aingar had on his machine. I put his version of the file in my EXE folder and now it works. It remains to be seen why that was the case. For now I would pin this thread or something, just in case some other poor soul has this issue. Thank you all for the help.

Edit: Turns out I didn't even need the d3d8.dll. The issue was the incorrect D3DX9_43.dll in SYSWOW64. Just for future reference.
