I'm still trying to get my head around everything that is and isn't OORP. I have a char idea floating around in my head but I'd like to get some feedback on whether it is or isn't OORP. Character concept is a Independent Trader affiliated to but not actually a member of one of the Unlawful factions. I have no intention of pirating on this character, so the Indy Trader/Smugger ID seems more appropriate. It's more a Unlawful faction sympathiser.
I'm going to use Liberty Rogues as an example, I pulled some info from FL stat for this.
As I understand it, a Liberty Rogue (LR IFF) shouldn't be landing on a Lawful Liberty base regardless of whether he's using an LR ID or in Indy Trader/Smuggler ID. What about Lawful bases in other houses, with each of those IDs?
As an example of what I'm talking about, the LR base in Pennsylvania gives good prices for engine components. The best places to get these are New Tokyo, Honshu and New Berlin. Now, there's a Junker's base in New Berlin, so that's somewhere a LR could dock regardless, however, that that brings in blockade running, which is another thing entirely.
Now, my personal view is that a LR ID/LR IFF trader wouldn't be welcome on a Samura or Koshiro base but an Indy Trader/Smugger with LR IFF would be acceptable. Question is, am I right?
If I am right, which is the best ID, Indy Trader or Smuggler. Obviously, if I was running contrabrand as well, then Smuggler ID would be the way to go, but if I'm supplying Unlawful bases with Legal goods from outside the Unlawful faction's ZOI? Also, something I've not seen mentioned anywhere, and I've read a lot of posts on smuggling, is whether blockade running and bypassing trade embargoes counts as smuggling or not?
Smuggler does the same, with the added benefit of you being on friendly terms with unlawfull groups.
Maybe you don't have a hard time with pirates with a smuggler ID as you would with Indy trader ID.
Also, take care of your reputations. With the new reputation setting tool, as an Indy trader, you might find yourself hostile to some of the factions, which I imagine wouldn't happen to a smuggler.
As for a Liberty Rogue tagged ship landing on other house lawfull bases. Well... think of it this way. Would a criminal, local criminal in you home country have much problems to go to a shopping mall in a neighboring country, considering that he was allready allowed to leave, having passport and all, and is not much high profile, eh?
After all, you are not an Outcast or Corsair, the bane of sirius, eh?
Well if someone with a Trader ID or Smuggler ID with an unlawful IFF is not allowed to dock on lawful bases ... then why are those with Trader ID's and Smuggler ID's with lawful IFF's docking on unlawful bases?
When it comes to Trader and Smuggler ID's ... they're independent and are basically neutral (ie: working for themselves). The only difference between them is that a Trader ID is supposed to be leaning more toward the lawful side and the Smuggler ID is supposed to be leaning more toward the unlawful side. So if you wanna be lawful take the Trader ID ... if you wanna be unlawful (or shady) then go with the Smuggler ID.
There's quite a few smugglers around with unlawful IFF, and often the unlawful ID to go with it. I don't know how they all operate, but I know the LWB and RHA ones dont dock on any bases except allied or neutral ones. Junkers give you a good spread, letting you sell most stuff (as it should be, in rp) and there's always some nice power bases if you just want to grind credits (Padua/Leiden and Casablanca, for example). You don't need to touch lawful bases to make good money, and you wont get people shouting at you for oorp.
