Wifi is worse because it's wireless nature. It's prone to interferences, snopping, etc. It's always better to use wired instead of WiFI though.
Yes, the bottleneck is in the Internet and lag is caused by routers and switches between you and the server - each one adds a small delay - the distance itself adds a tiny delay, especially if there's a satellite somewhere in the connection. From a DOS prompt type 'tracert' then the IP address of the server. That will show you were in the progress of your connection to the server the worst delays are and how many hops have to me made. Not that there's anything you can do about it.:)You can try tweaking Windows IP settings - see http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php . It's debatable if you'll experience any improvement - some claim to.
Wifi security is pretty good these days with everything encrypted strongly (if you set it up that way). It's the dreaded intermittent connections and weak signals are the bane of anyone who's tried to set up a wireless network.
