How to fix Vista problems:

Run as an admin.

Get rid of anti-virus stuff. I was utterly sick of Norton and McAfee is as useful as a bomb shelter made of soggy cardboard. Got AVG, took someone's advice to only install the very basics (having anything more than that doesn't work) and Freelancer multiplayer started to work.
