Hmm. I hadn't thought of that. It'd technically depend on just how many "factions" there are in the game nowadays, cause only have 10 class slots per weapon anyway... Still, even if some of them overlapped, it wouldn't be a big deal. For example, A Harvester drone overlaps with Liberty fighters. Is he going to fly out there just so he can use Liberty weapons or vice versa? Weapons that overlap (codename or generic) can be edited to do just that, fit on multiple classes and therefore a broad spectrum of ships (civilian weapons are universal for example, as are codename). By this token, military ships can only use THEIR guns, while civilian ships could use "stolen" or "salvaged" military weapons. Perhaps this could be "illegal" like cardamine? Somebody flying around with their tricked out (Millenium) Falcon using stolen military grade weapons and sensors:)At the least, PC navies could police for "stolen" weapons. Starting to see the idea? It would ENCOURAGE rp, and even special RPers... I like this idea:)
As for missiles, mines and such... they're the problem. But again, if weapons are balanced out and the low end is kicked off, then there won't be HUNDREDS of missiles and mines, just a few, and they can be made to fit on ANY weapon class, therefore being universal. Or generic missiles and mines could be dropped in favor of faction specific missiles... I like this idea:)Again, this goes back to dealing with large numbers of weapons and in this last idea, creating new ones. It's not HARD, persay, just very time consuming.
Also, I know a hardpoint on a ship can be specified as gun only, or gun AND missile, so probably missile only, too? Of course this would involve modifying ALL the ships to reflect this change. And therefore I discard this idea as too much work for too little gain.
To answer your question then... No, I don't think it would affect that stuff at all. The result once finished would be exactly what is hoped for, it would free up slots so as to allow specifying usage of certain equipment, or at the very least, give the devs some more lee way with their goals. All in all, it's a great idea when looked at from this standpoint. It's just a major pain in the ass dealing with SOOOOO many weapons.

Without reading the rest of this after reading Marshal's post, I have to agree with him. Apart of the game is working yourself up from the smallest ship to the more powerful ship that is able to handle itself. If you relinquish the smaller less powerful ships, people building a fighter won't have that option.
And, Rudo, I see what you mean, I understand where you're coming from, but I think removing those ships will take us even further away what Freelancer is, and it will create too much work on the mod team, who are trying to add new things, not take the old away.
I like this idea, and would love to see it implemented.
As far as NPC patrols go, I don't have a problem with leveling them up to Rhineland level, but to compensate, it might be nice to reduce the frequency with which they suddenly appear.
I would approve of NPCs being unified... at Liberty level. Mostly harmless and able to be ignored when you don't care about them, but a constant slight risk of a Cruiser patrol or a Rogue gunboat patrol showing up and making you run to the hills.
And yes, add some more NPC gunboat (or higher) encounters where appropriate. Example given: Main gates to house main worlds - shouldn't they be defended by capital class ships? Especially if said house is in war with another house.
And if this is being considered doable, give the high level (or all of them) NPC proper 'discovery' armor upgrades, because the ones they have now are either broken or not giving the right amount of armor, they are too easily oneshot minirazor killed. And their shields are for some reason not the same as the player character class 10 shields.
The wishlist goes on: NPC trade vessles. Easy pickins' ey? Can they be fixed to? Please? Pretty please?
