Just had a little discussion with a few people who claim it's probably not all that scary judging from trailers and gameplay bits. Anyone here played it? It's still one of -the- best horror games ever made if you ask me. Regardless of its graphics.
As I said over the chat, if you play a game to feel the game's atmosphere, Undying is the best horror game after all these years. Even Clive Barker himself couldn't beat that game ever again.
Undying has always been really cool & I love the atmosphere & running around with a 6-shooter, but after playing Silent Hill, the creepy factor of all other games decrease by a factor of 10 in comparison.
I still have it though & I'm tempted to re-install & play it again if only I had the time to slack off this week :(
the game is not scary - but manages to create a tense and very good ambient. in order to be truely "scary" its old graphics engine isn t powerful enough. it makes very good use of sounds, suspense and very good level design.
sadly, the later stages of the game do not really match the earlier ones. - in my opinion, the "Lizbeth" chapter and the "oneiros" chapters are the very best - while the "eternal autumn" and the "cove" are a little worse.
considering its a 1st person shooter primarily - its still one of the best games. - it was definitely ahead at its time in all, design, atmosphere and concept.
nowadays, i think there re better games out though.
I disagree on the afraid / level design parts with you Jinx but I understand your claims and they are correct from a point of view and many claims are like that as well as a different pole.
I played it when it came out and graphics were awesome then, of course, they fail now if we observe it from a "today's" perspective. Heh, even Crysis fails a bit now.
The game was beh only at the very last parts. But, I agree that Lizbeth parts were the best.
Still, a very good game.
Also as its spiritual successor from my pov, I also suggest Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth.
