MY PC took its last swipe at me yeserday by killing my C drive.
My question is (I do not have a backup of my characters so), are they gone for good or is there some devine action that can be taken by the admins to see that they live?

Any help at all pls?
I'm really surprised that nobody has answered your questions! :rtfm:
I'm new here, but I started playing FL (Freelancer) in 2004 and I have experience as an SP (server police) dating back to then. Therefore, I have the knowledge to answer your questions.
Your MP (Multi-Player or online) characters aren't stored on your computer, but are stored on each server where you've played, unless they get deleted due to inactivity (some servers delete characters that haven't been played in a certain amount of time, usually 30 days) or a player wipe (when all characters are deleted, not just yours).
When you play FL online the first time, the game generates a FLID -- Freelancer ID, not to be confused with the Freelancer ID that all Discovery characters, both SP (Single Player) and MP, start with. When the FLID is created, Freelancer warns you to keep a copy of it.
Did you make a copy of your FLID? I'm guessing that you didn't do so. The FLID is stored on your hard drive, so you should have made multiple copies. Freelancer gives you the option (in the Start Menu) to print out your FLID, so somewhere I've got a printed copy of my FLID (don't ask me to find it). I've also copied the FLID to a .txt file which I've copied to My Documents and periodically backed up with my most important files from My Documents. I've got so many copies of my FLID that when I've had to replace my computer, I would find my FLID somewhere, so I could reuse it when I went online the first time with my new install of Freelancer. I'm still using the same FLID that I first used in 2004.
If you can't recover any data from your hard drive and you didn't back up your FLID, then you're probably out of luck. I've heard many times that a server owner/operator cannot look up your FLID and give it to you. Chances are that you'll have to start over again with a new FLID, but you won't be able to use the same character names, until your old characters get deleted (which might happen automatically due to inactivity). I seriously doubt that the Admins here will be able to help you get back your old characters.
For future reference: Back up your FLID, so this won't happen to you again!
