The above gave me another idea...
If criminals disrupt a trade lane that Mr. Monk is about to use, he might feel obligated to teach those criminals a lesson and he would definitely need to go through that trade lane to get to his destination (i.e. the idea of going around a disrupted trade lane would never occur to him).
