Tag versus ID Help?

Ok so I've retruned to FL for the first time in about a year. Put in some 20 hours (thats horrible.. how can I give so much time to a game already?).

I've read the rules, but need some clarification on the terminology.

Tags, versus ID's versus ships / weapon mounts..

TAG as I read it in some places, refers to a clan / faction reference. But then someone in game was telling me my tag was showing as Liberty Police (to which they sent me to the F8 status screen). I don't get it.

Maybe the best way to ask this is this..

If I want to be a Corsair, what am I supposed to have for a tag, an ID, and a ship so that I don't get Admin'd to death about being out of the game rules?

If I want to be a Freelancer, what do I use for a tag, an ID, and a ship?

I'm sorry, the rules are just too scant on what word refers to what as compared to what people are telling me inside the game itself, and I can't figure out where the * I'm supposed to be now.

Welcome to Discovery.

TAG has multiple definitions which I'm sure is leading to your confusion:
  1. Player faction tag, which means a code, usually at the beginning of a character's name that indicates that the player character belongs to a player faction (called clans on most other servers) -- the first two characters listed in my signature below, -{BD}-Kirikabu and -{BD}-Wako, belong to the Black Dragon Society, a Hogosha player faction which uses the -{BD}- tag;
  2. NPC faction affiliation, which is what you gain when you become friendly enough with an NPC faction -- this can be seen BEFORE other players' names when you see them in space and can be checked when you use F8 (scroll down to the bottom of the list and if the last name is flashing, that is your NPC faction tag/affiliation; if the last faction isn't flashing, then you don't have an NPC faction tag or you have one that belongs to an NPC faction that you haven't met yet).
ID refers to the mountable piece of equipment that indicates what you want your character to be. The ID also acts as your tractor beam and is required by server rules. All new player characters start with a Civilian ID that is usable until rank 40 when you need to replace it, according to RP server rules. Other servers have different rules about when (or even IF) you have to replace the Civilian ID.

When you replace the Civilian ID, you can get a generic ID or a faction ID. The following generic IDs are available: Trader, Smuggler (controversial, since some players think it is useless), Miner, Military, Mercenary (often called Merc) and Pirate. Faction IDs are named for the factions that issue them.

If you join a Corsair player faction, then your name should match their usage, such as your_name_Benitez (if you join the Benitez player faction) or [TBH]_your_name (if you join TheBrotherhood). Obviously, you need their permission to create a character with their player faction tag.

Corsair players basically have three IDs that they can use: actual Corsair ID (making you a "real" Corsair), Pirate ID (if you want to be a Corsair-affiliated pirate) and Smuggler ID (if you want to RP a Corsair-affiliated smuggler). Corsair players shouldn't use the Trader ID, as that is for traders who are primarily lawful. Corsairs should use Corsair ships or possibly allied ships. Corsair-affiliated smugglers can use any freighters/transports, but should avoid any ship sold by the Outcasts or their allies, unless the ship can be purchased from a neutral or Corsair/allied source. Corsairs should use Corsair (including allies) and Civilian weapons.

Getting a Freelancer tag is hard, but can be done. The Freelancer ID can be purchased at certain locations that I won't list here. A Freelancer can use any ship allowed by the Freelancer ID. Note that if use a Corsair ship, you won't be welcomed by the Outcasts in Omicron Alpha and if you use an Outcast ship, the Corsairs won't welcome you in Omicron Gamma... Actually, come to think of it, you will be welcomed as a volunteer for target practice...:crazy:

@ Juan: A bit to much explained. An explanation to ID's and Faction tags would have done the job.
Clan tags are staying outside the general server rules. They are part of the specific clan rules.

@ Envomni: If you want to play a Freelancer the ship choice is a delicate matter, because OC PC's don't like corsair and ally vessels in their space and vice versa. If you want to have a BHG ship, all unlawful PC's might chase you, just because of the ship. So Zoner, Junker and Independent or Civilan vessels would be the best choice.
In general a Freelancer can use any ship he has access to, but you should not fly a ship of a faction you are hostile with. Their is no exactly rule, but a common sense.

Respectful

This is suprising to me since I always believed it to be impossible. Since Freelancers have no enemies or allies, how would it be done as a practical matter?

Ok very very helpful thank you..

Alright then.. character tags for visual ID in your name..
Faction tags show/develop colour (visual) tag of the name versus what another player sees you as in comparison to their faction, so one person may see your name in green, another as red..
And ID tag is the tractor beam / bold statement of you selected faction then

Sound about right?

Ok so I still have one problem. The faction tag, making the colour identity, is not changing for me. I have other factions with more green bars than my blinking faction, but it doesn't change into one of those higher "friendlier" ranked factions as my connection. Will it only change once I pick up a particular kind of ID like the freelancer_id or something?

I've "acheived" the Freelancer ID.
But my flashing tag still associates me to Liberty Police faction..
Even though its now surpassed in green bars by 6 other factions?

Envomni: Buying a Freelancer ID is a lot easier than getting the Freelancer TAG:
  1. Go to Monk's post and click on the link he provided to the thread on how to get a Freelancer TAG;
  2. Read that thread and follow the advice therein to get your reputation maxed out friendly with the Freelancer faction;
  3. Reduce your reputation with the other maxed out friendly factions by accepting and failing their missions until the Freelancer faction is the only maxed out friendly faction;
  4. If you still have an LPI tag at this point, accept and fail LPI missions until you lose their tag, which should give you the Freelancer tag (IF you're not maxed out friendly with anybody else).
If the above fails, refer to Reputation Bugged? Read here, Another one of DBoy's tutorials. While you're at it, you might want to take a look at this thread: New to Discovery? Welcome!, Guide-Post, important links you should know...
