They work, you just have to put them on a ship with good archs. The rogue dessi does much better with primaries then solaris. It fails to strike craft because of its archs.
I have an LABC and an RPC that use solaris VERY well. It is all about putting them on something that can mass fire in quite a few directions, and don't fly in a strait line.
Make sure you have something else to fight funboats. Solaris are laughably weak vs them. On my LABC i have to go to mortars and cerbs to fight anything better then a fighter. The RPC is maneuverable enough to beat a funboat just by attrition.
I would never load a heavy cruiser with solaris. They don't have the power core to sustain them and not enough maneuverability or smallness to use them effectively.
