Yesterdays events had been hectic. As soon as Lily had undocked from Richmond, she had picked up David's signal in Kansas, alone. She didn't really know what happened when she arrived, but it didn't take her long to analyse the situation. David's Guardian was damaged, and was facing a Rheinland Wraith, identified with the callsign Felicia.Drum. David decided to reveal everything to Lily, especially that Drum and Defmir were the same person, but this time under the influence of a nomad artifact.
She remember the battle. Defmir was one hell of a pilot and not many could survive an encounter with her. Against all odds, they did. Barely.
Arresting her as she broke out of her pod aboard Richmond had been difficult, but in the end, they succeeded. Now they were here, aboard Radford. Defmir was in the Laboratory #4 in coma while the medteam was constantly keeping an eye on her.
David was here, with Lily and a small group of dedicated guards that participated to the arrest of Defmir and saw the whole scene. It was now their duty to keep her safe from everyone else, untill it would be time.
The room was quiet except for the beeping of the heart monitor, still and empty. Hale had called a navy doctor he trusted over to the station. The man had dealt with David's own injuries from battles, and seen him through some serious situations, a good doctor, at least in Hale's eyes. But the answers to David's questions were all the same.
"We just don't know."
The doctor had looked at him with something like pity as he left the room that afternoon.
"I understand, David." he had muttered to him as he left, giving the admiral what was supposed to be a reassuring look. But that was a few hours ago now. Nothing was changing, or even likely to change. Reassurance only lasted so long, and David's mind was doing backflips.
Regular beeping. At least it was regular. David hadn't slept since they'd arrived at Radford, nor had he left the room Lucia was in for more than a few minutes at a time.
"Should have seen this coming." he muttered to himself as he glanced over at the hospital bed containing Lucia Defmir.
"You saw this coming, didn't you..."
No answer. He stood up and crossed the room. Standing next to her bed he brushed a little of her hair off her face. 'Pale' he thought to himself. 'Paler than normal, anyway'.
"Who are you, Fel? I don't know if I know you any more. Who're you going to be when you wake up?"
Still no reply... The silence rang in his ears, interupted by the steady beeping noise. He sat back down again and closed his eyes in another failed attempt at sleeping.
He was asleep, at last, but the beeping was still there in his dreams. Memories of the last few months rushing through his unconcious mind. Voices... Her voice... That song... Familiar, broken. Little shards of glass from a broken mirror that only reflected hindsight.
Quote:
Twinkle twinkle little star… How I wonder what you are.
Lead the way and I’ll follow
I owe everything in large part to you, you’ve given me a hope… it’s beautiful.
Naive and easy-going as always, what if I’m the assassin?
Up above the world so high… like a diamond in the sky.
All those dark thoughts reaching out through the cracks in my mind.
How do you do it? Your face never betraying you, never showing the guilt?
But I see the doubt, the familiar bitter taste of death in your eyes.
When the blazing sun is gone… when the nothing shines are gone.
But then again, I changed the weapon set-up, I’d like… to be more like you.
Or to be a tiny spark to brighten your day.
You won’t even notice how the snare gets tighter around your neck.
Then you show your little light… twinkle twinkle all the night.
So cold, he’ll remain cold forever and you’ll be the only one left
Promise you’ll stay?
Weak and confused, all these feelings will blind you until the end.
Then the traveler in the dark… thanks you for your little spark.
Tired of being alone, tired of everything.
Why did you refuse??
It’ll be quick… shh don’t fight them.
He could not see which way to go… if you did not twinkle so.
Was this truly what your heart wanted? Did you ever listen to it?
Do you think I’d forgive you after everything you took from me???
YOU MADE ME DIE!
Beep.
He woke suddenly, sitting upright in the chair he'd drifted off in. David looked around, eyes wide as he slowly leant back into the chair again, closing his them again, against the bright light in the room.
Beep.
"Dreaming, David... That's all." he muttered to himself quietly. He looked up and over at the bed containing the person he'd just been dreaming about. "Different dreams now..."
He stood up and poured himself a glass of water, trying to let some of the confusion drop away, as if water would wash it out, and de-tangle the all the threads. he couldn't think like this. It was too much, and too close to home.
'Space.' His own voice echoed in his head. At least it was his own, even if it sounded a little distant. David drank the glass of water and picked up a his datapad and comms unit before walking over to her bed and taking her hand in his.
"What I can't handle is the uncertainty, Fel." he whispered "Wake up... Just so I can know. Please?"
He let go of her hand and walked to the door, taking a look back over his shoulder before walking down to the hangar bays and his guardian. Maybe flying would clear his mind. It'd worked before.
David had left for more than a week, and came back accompanied by a little girl. She wondered who she was, and Lily was sure she wasn't David's daughter as he claimed. Perhaps it was another of these mysteries he had the fashion to keep secret.
Meanwhile, the global situation had relaxed as they reduced the off limit zone to only the laboratory itself.
Lily kept an eye on the little girl, All she did was standing there in front of the window, doing nothing at all except staring at the inside of the room.
