Here's my problem - I'm trying to level up to get a better ship, and mostly doing NPC missions to achieve this. So I do lots of "bounty" missions, destroy cargo, kill ships, etc.

Here's the problem - I seem to drop the connection to the server a lot while at home, maybe due to timeouts, and when this happens all sorts of crazy stuff happens. NPC ships will continue on their trajectory but flying at cruise speeds. They become invulnerable to any and all weapons I use. These ships will stay on my radar at 100K+ ranges until they just show up as "far". Many times when this happens, my ship will continue taking damage to the shields and eventually the hull as if the NPCs were still in the area. Nanobots and shield batteries don't work.

Finally, sometimes the Mission Commission reads me as out of range of the mission waypoints, even though I'm less than a KM away, and will threaten to end the mission if I don't get back in range.

Unsurprisingly, this is more than a little annoying. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something I can be doing differently? Should I switch to mining as my primary source of income ? Please help.

A couple notes - yes, I'm gaming over WIFI, but my signal remains at 100% throughout the game. I am sitting literally just below the router. Also, my internet connection is not extremely fast at home, but it doesn't randomly disconnect me. So I don't know why I'm having this trouble.

Find the start menu shortcut for Discovery and add -lag after the quoted executable path, that will show when you are just lagging (yellow) and when you are having conn problems (red)

Also, generally not a good idea to do missions for starter money. The AI is more suitable for mid- and high-level combat.

I'll try that tonight and let you know what happens.

So what would you recommend? I've read a bit about mining, is that my option right now?

Thanks for the reply!

What's your current level? If you're very new, go into the big blue nebula behind Planet Erie and shoot the small rocks, and Helium will appear in your cargo hold, and you can sell it on Planet Erie or on Bethlehem Station for a few hundred credits. There's no mining check with the Helium there, so any ship and guns will work. Do that for 2-3 hours and you can pocket a couple of million credits, which is enough to buy a Dromedary on Bethlehem Station. Keep working the Helium and carry it to Okinawa where it sells for 5.5k per unit, and buy Helium-3 to sell on Planet Pittsburgh in New York for 8.5k on the return trip.

I'm a level 26, flying a hawk. I have ~$300,000 on character right now.

Drop the Hawk, buy a freighter.

Trading and mining are by far the quickest ways to earn cash.

Work your way up from a freighter to a transport and to a big transport, finally reaching the 5kers.

After that, you should be financially secure.

Okay do what I wrote. You should rep to GMG and buy a Kamome as soon as you have the money, then you can mine your own Helium-3 in Okinawa and use the same ship to mine Helium in Penn, and 2800 cargo hold gives you plenty of room.

Ok I got the rhino. Mining helium seems pretty profutable at philly station. Thanks for the advice. Where would you advise buying the next level up, a transport?
