I think larger ships should have required crew compliments in the cargo hold. The amount of crew required would be stated by class of ship. Trading vessels, seeing as how they require their cargo for profit would only have to take up maybe 10 to 20 units for crew. This way if a battle ship was shot down it would have to replenish its crew. Any vessel which is not properly manned would be unable to engage in combat. This is a bit of a pain in the butt and I know it, but thats the point! It just fits with RP that larger ships require more than one person to fly and make it combat ready am I right?
Thoughts?
that isn t mandatory. - its one of the things that is very much up to the player. - shipcrew is a commodity - and not part of the ship, so you can roleplay a shipcrew without having 300 units of shipcrew in your hold. just the same with fuel, food, water, oxygen etc. - direly needed to survive ( or even a toilet is needed ) - yet we don t have that stuff..... as a commodity.
its like asking fighter pilots to carry all the stuff they need with them all the time, too. - it also takes a sourcefile to show us how much crew what ship can operate with ( minimum, standard and optimal ) - and it must apply to fighters, bombers, gunboats, transports, and all other ships... a lot of work for something that cannot be enforced and is usually roleplayed anyway. - i haven t met many BB captains that RP to be all alone on their ships - even if they don t carry the crew in their hold, they still have it working in the seperate sections of the ship. - often do i hear system calls like "engine room, more power to the weapons!" or "crew, prepare to leave the ship" - imo, thats fine for me in terms of roleplay.

Yes I understand this. I just think that if you had to purchase crew when your ship went down they would be lost and you would have to recruit for your vessel again. Just something to make Battle Ships more RPish.
Though you are probably right, and simply role playing is enough. Once again just throwing ideas out there.
I also am of the opinion that all the things my ship needs to operate at normal capacity is in the ship and not in my cargo hold. The other stuff is not behind the reenforced double hulled superstructure of my ship thus my cargo hold is scannable and the rest is on a limited basis. With the low exchange rate of the spaceship crew as a commodity, Id say they are just RP props and thats you could role play moveing recruits from boot camp to thier first duty stations. Or takeing experiened crew to shore doing transfers. I dont know. But as for requireing that we carry crew, no thanks. What my ship needs comes in the cost of purchase.
If fact alot of time the ship dealer is OOC for me and I just do the transaction and get on to RPing the point when it is obtained. Or built rather than bought.
That was the spirit in which it was said, which is a good thing surely. Its not a bad idea to do anything to make BS seem more real. But, as you've seen, there are many arguments against restricting people from flying and writing such a restriction into the engine of the game.
Use em as RP props if you want, or do it as Jinx says. Its good to hear from people who want to improve RP, so keep firing the ideas out.
