"Kole..." The young woman whispered while looking at the sleeping newborn child. She was lying on the bed under the sheet and smiling happily.
The man was standing near her bed, looking at both of them and smiling himself.
Once the doctor finished his checks, he nodded and said "Everything is fine with your wife. She will have to stay in here for a couple of days, mr. Suzuki."
The man nodded in response. After that doctor left the room. Outside he met his colleague.
"Did you notice?" the last one asked silently.
"Yes." doctor said with unhappy face.
"Will you tell them?"
The first one sighed "No... I can't tell them that we want to keep their child here to study..."
"What are you going to do then?" another one said calmly.
"What can I do?" the doctor sighed again.
"This is something we never faced before. Would be wrong to let such opportunity get away." the second doctor said with no expression on his face. For a few moments he was looking at his colleague, noticing his confusion. Then he put his hand on the first one shoulder and said "Allow me, I have an idea."
Then he walked in the chamber and said from the doorstep "Mr. Suzuki. Can I speak to you?"
The man left his wife and approached doctor. "Yes?"
The doctor cleared his throat and continued "There is one issue about your child. We have detected some strange anomaly in his brain..."
"Is it dangerous?" Asked the father, cutting him half. By his voice was obvious that he worry.
Doctor sighed "We don't know... we haven't faced anything like this before."
They both looked at the sleeping child and his mother holding him tight. Then the doctor continued "We don't want to take your child from you, however we have to study this to ensure it won't endanger your kid's life. If you don't want your child to be taken away from you, I will understand. And I can suggest that one of our experts will pay a visit to your home each month to check your child. Since it is in our both interests, we will take no charges for that."
Man hesitated for a while, then nodded "Alright, I will take this option."
He then returned to his wife. His wife looked to him and asked "Anything wrong?"
"No, nothing, darling. Doctors said that they will visit our child to ensure that our child is healthy." Man smiled to calm his wife...
"Good morning, Kole." The woman near the table said.
Kole slightly smiled in response then looked around. His sister and father were also present. The kid moved to his place and sat to the table as well.
"Hello, dummy." girl in front of him said crossly.
Instead of answering her, he looked at his mother who put a plate with breakfast before him "Will that man come today again?"
"Of course he will. Someone have to learn why are you so defective." his sister said quickly.
Ignoring her again, Kole quickly ate his breakfast and went to his room. He lied on the bed and started to look on the roof.
"Well?" Hakido looked at the doctor who just left Koles room.
"All the same. I can only suspect that his behavior is effect of this anomaly. And I can say that it don't affect him in any other way." doctor said, sighing with some relief, but also with some disappointment. "We won't be able to study it without our equipment. I can't bring it here..."
"If it doesn't affect him anyhow, except of such mood, then I think he will be fine. Thanks for your help..."
"It's your decision after all. Hope you and your child will be alright."
They both went down to the exit. Near the door they shook hands and doctor left. Hakido returned to his wife and explained the situation.
"So he will stay like that forever?" she asked silently.
"Who knows..." Hakido said wistfully "He's five years old, but acting too calmly for his age. I wondering what's going on in his head sometimes."
Both sighed and went to sleep with their own thoughts...
The park. Kole hated to walk around. Hated because other kids always attempted to mock him. But this time he couldn't refuse to his parents. Together they walked through long alley. He was walking ahead of others so did noticed when they distracted on one of their friends and lost them.
"Hey, snowball!" he heard the voice behind him.
For a second Kole stopped, but then just kept walking ahead.
"I am talking to you, white haired dumb!" the same voice almost yelled. Kole hide his hands in the sleeves and kept ignoring the offender.
"Can you hear me..." the boy behind him jumped to Kole and roughly pulled him by the arm. In the moment Kole strike him with knife he had hidden in the sleeve.
The boy fell without any scream. Everyone around noticed those two. One lying on the ground and bleeding, second standing above with bloody knife. Koles face showed no expression. He was looking on the kid indifferently.
For a second no one realized what happen. Then others ran to the wounded child. Someone screamed. Hakido heard the scream and noticed the crowd. He ran in there, seeing the picture.
"Kole!" he cried. Child turned on him and attempted to hit him with knife as well, but Hakido dodged that. He looked at his kid with a surprised face. Kole didn't said a word. He looked a bit scared. But for a minute everyone around heard the words "Hate you!" Then he just ran away. Hakido remained till the doctors show up and explained the situation to them.
By the time Kole reached the house, ran to his room and locked inside. For a while he stood there, lowered his head. The images of that kid showed up before him. He only smiled, feeling some pleasure from what he did. He was still holding the blade in his hand. For a minute he gazed on the blood. Then just throw the knife against the wall and fell on the bed...
... When he awaken, he found himself in unfamiliar place. For a moment he couldn't realize what's going on. Then sudden fear hit him and he jumped off the bed.
"You have awaken, Kole." some unfamiliar female voice said. Kole looked on the woman. He didn't knew who she is. Before she did anything he ran off the room. Some other kids were playing around. He ran at random until he found an exit. Everything outside was unfamiliar. For several moments he was standing there.
"They... left me?" he said in a while, shakily.
"There you are. Why do you run from me?" he heard the same voice.
He turned around, feeling totally desperate. The only people he loved have betrayed him. Without saying any word. He ran back to the room. For a while he was sitting on the bed. Then quickly jumped off the window and started to run away from the shelter.
He have been running for whole day. No matter where, just away from the shelter. When he finally stopped there was nothing familiar around. He was all alone. The thoughts of what should he do now messed with hatred that filled his hearth. He hated his parents for that betrayal. And he hated himself for those thoughts. Unable to hold himself much longer he fall on the ground and screamed loudly...
After a while he calmed down and just went ahead. The night approached and by the time he reached the town, streets were dark already. The boy tried to find any place to sleep, but soon fell unconscious from hunger and exhaustion...
The first what he noticed when awaken was the man in the corner of the cramped room.
"Yo." he greeted the kid quietly.
"W-who are you?" Kole attempted to get up.
"The one who saved your life." Stranger gazed at him when kid fall back on the bed. "How did you ended up there?"
Kole remain silent, not willing to remember anything of his past.
"What's your name? Where's your family?"
"I don't have any..." kid replied tiredly.
The man grunted "Fine then." for a few moments he remained silent "I will call you Timothy. Well, seems like you have no place to go..."
Kid didn't reply, just looked on the roof.
"Hmph. You're not very talkative. Alright, will talk to you latter." He said and left the room.
Once the stranger left, the kid slowly get up from the bed, holding his stomach. He looked around, trying to find some food. On the table near his bed he found a plate with sandwiches. Without thinking he just took one and quickly ate it. By the time stranger came back the kid finished all sandwiches and was resting on the bed.
"You have finished eating?" man said while looking on the empty plate "Well then. Care to answer my questions now?"
Kid nodded.
"How did you ended all alone on the street?"
"I've ran from shelter..."
The man grunted "Not really interested in what happen to your family..." he crossed arms on the chest.
"My name is Andrew Roberts. And I am thief. Actually I dislike helping others... But I will make an exception for you. If you want to become a thief, of course."
The kid remain silent for a while, thinking of such offer, but then agreed.
"Splendid." Andrew smirked "We'll see what you made off tomorrow. Rest for now." he said and left the kid resting...
It was late evening when two men walked into the bar. Both examined it quietly. Most of the seats were empty. Three people were sitting in the counter, a few were occupying tables. Two guys were playing billiards at the far end of the hall. One of newcomers spat and both of them sat at a nearby table. The waiter came to them, asking if they wanted to order anything.
"A beer." one said gloomily.
"Same." the other said and lit up a cigar.
Once waiter had gone, the first one put his arms on the table, and as before gloomily said "Damn him.."
The other puffed his cigar and calmly replied "Relax, Kyle."
"Don't try to shut me up, Leo! That kid pisses me off, thinks that he's as good as us!" the guy he called Kyle almost hit the table with his fist, but stopped in the last moment.
"That's annoying, but nothing we can do about it."
"I won't just leave it like this. The boy may become a good robber, but he still has to grow up to have the same share of the profits as we do."
"Hmm.." Leo puffed his cigar again and chuckled slightly "Boss seems to care for the kid."
"Damn right.. if not for that, I would have killed him long ago." Kyle looked away, noticing the waiter passing near.
"We can use it to increase our share."
"How is that?" Mark looked at him questioningly.
"A bit of intimidation, perhaps some threatening..."
"Hmm.." Kyle lay back, crossing his arms on his chest and rubbing his chin. After a while he said "Hah! That could work. Let's do this."
The waiter returned with two glasses of beer and put them on the table. Both men took their glasses and started to drink...
In the early morning, when the streets were yet empty, the two were waiting in a side street for the boy. As he showed up, both left their cover, walking to him.
"Yo, Timothy!"
"Have a few minutes for a talk?"
"What talk?" the kid stopped and looked at them questioningly.
As they approached him, one of them hit the kid in the stomach. The other took his hands. After that they quickly left the street and returned to their cover. One looked around. Since there was no-one near, he took the kids neck and started to push on it.
"Let go!"
"In a moment. Just will make a demand you can't refuse. Listen well, kid, if you don't want your life to become a hell, you will do as we say."
The other man approached them and continued "We don't think that you are mature enough to have the same share as us. So we are taking yours, until you grow some balls."
"Damn you!" the kid yelled, trying to take a hand off his neck. Kyle tossed him away and Timothy fell to the ground.
"You should watch your tongue, or I will cut it off."
The kid tried to get up. He felt as if everything inside was pushing him to fight these two back, but he knew he couldn't, though his hatred was growing. A dimness began to shroud the periphery of his vision: a dark cloud swallowing him.
When he awoke he was on his knees. For a while he was blind: the darkness still filling his vision. He felt something warm running down his cheeks. With slow move of his hand he wiped it away. When his vision became clear, he noticed that there was blood on his hands. Something drip on the ground, and he noticed a spot of blood. He wiped his other cheek and raised his hand to look on it. The second he did it, he noticed two men, lying on the ground in a puddle of blood.
For several moments the fear paralysed him. He couldn't say a word. When the shock passed he slowly stammered "What.. happened?". The thoughts chaotically started to return in his mind. Some very clouded images started to appear before his eyes. The fear was replaced with horror. Thoughts became blurred, but amongst it all: one was clear - he could not come back.
