As mentioned earlier, trading IS tedious on purpose. It's simply the nature of the disco beast. If you really want something bad enough here, you can either take the time & effort required to get that specific something you want, or you can re-evaluate how much you think you really want that specific something. I'm sure it's not what you want to hear, but it really is that simple. Trading is not the only way to make money on server, so maybe you'll have more fun finding one of the other non-trading methods that's more to your liking. It really just boils down to a basic question:
Do you believe that one should expect the environment to adapt to them, or should they adapt to the environment?
An earlier comment was to sit reading a book while the autopilot works. Just go to waypoints and dock. I can do this and read. - even when I am taking tradelanes.

I can't see what reason anyone would have for wanting trading to be boring and tedious. Making trading more fun would make more people become traders. More traders would mean more traffic for pirates to plunder and for law enforcement to scan for contraband.
In short: More fun for traders -> More traders -> More traffic -> More RP opportunities.
I've only run into law enforcement who held people up to do cargo scans twice. When I returned later they were no longer there. They probaby got bored. If there was more traffic there would be reason for law enforcement to set up more permanent customs stops where they search everyones cargo for contraband and that would in turn make people think more about which routes they take. Perhaps taking these Rheinland alloys through the Texas system isn't such a good idea on account of the trade embargo? Perhaps I shouldn't go to New Berlin with a Bretonia Armed Forces ship and ID?
This community has a lot to gain from making trading more fun!
You want an autopilot to fly your ship back and forth, while you only play to choose commodities once you land.
Don't try to bullshit me with fluffery like "RP opportunities". What kind of RP opportunity does allowing everyone to AFK-trade present?
All you want is to do something else while your ship makes credits for you all day, and you don't even want to play the game.
Have you ever tried just not simply doing the one most profitable route you know of over and over again? Try switching your routes. There are tons, and tons, of great routes with ending points of some being in the same systems as starting points for others, providing great opportunities to switch routes.
