People who fly a train know how annoying it is when someone attacked you and you managed to escape and realise: "Great... half of my cargo pods have been destroyed."
My idea to prevent this from happening was to put the hitbox over the containers. I don't know how to do that or if it is difficult to do though. You could then put their health up a lot so they won't get blown up by novas or mines because now they are no unfair advantage anymore when you get hit.
I don't really agree with your suggestion. I think this permanent damage to ships that needs to be repaired is a fun thing, it's an interesting addition that leaves traces of a fight on your ship. I wish my shire had it!
I realize it might be annoying because cargo pods are more difficult to come by than standard repairs, but that could be fixed by increasing the amount of locations that offer cargo pods.
What you may see as an annoyance now is actually an advantage at the same time. Each cargo pod has their own amount of health, and with the right amount of maneuvering and luck, it will sacrifice itself for a SNAC hit and save your ship hull some damage.
Containers are very often the trader's life insurance, because they safe you from SNACs. In the end, trains are much harder to kill than transports with a "normal" hitbox. At least that's my experience of flying and fighting them.
I know... I use this as well you just need to do fighter dodging with the train... I nearly lost all the cargo pods of my advanced train by that... but still I don't believe that is even wanted.
About the virtual visible damage... nothing in the game has it except for the vanilla transports so I don't see how that argument is valid, because some traders just don't buy new ones or sell all of them in the first place... how the hell does he ship anything then?
That's why we're looking to make all trains use those cargo "pods" (and then bring back the ability to blow them off of NPCs for cargo), but we haven't gotten around to adjusting the models yet.

Cargo pods are an unrealistic advantage for traders. You shoot a trader, and he loses his pod, but you dont hurt him, then he gets away with all his cargo, even though the pod it was in got destroyed?
It should be changed so that when a trader loses his pod, he loses some of his cargo too, to stop people using them like shields.
Further balancing for this, so that transports arnt too weak may be required. I like the idea of ships having individual bits that can be bloen off, and think it would be good to be added to more ships, imagine caps with ablative armour, so you have to keep attacking one side to get to the actual bit you can damage.

I just hate that the Civi 5ks center aim is in a complete hitbox hole when there's no containers on it. Shoot it from the side and you're shots go right through it
