They can be made to not require ammunition, just like the current cruiser/battleship/gunboat missiles require no ammunition.
But then its no fun:PSTill battleships should get really x100 armor, and pound at each other endless with their main guns, launching torpedoes and generally shootign the heck outta everything within 1k range.

Identity has always been an issue for capships in disco, especially for cruisers.
Battleships... they're the biggest guys on the block, and tend to want to slug the crap out of everything.
Gunboats... they're quick enough to both avoid capship fire and put the hurt on fighters/bombers, making them good defensive ships for other caps.
Bombers... they beat up bigger ships.
Fighters... they beat up bombers.
Cruisers? They're ok against other cruisers and can take on gunboats, but that still doesnt really give them a role, an identity as a seperate shipclass. They dont have anything they really excel at. If you're using gunboats to defend battleships against bombers, why on earth would the bombers call in cruisers to blow up the gunboats? The battleships would just wreck the cruisers in turn. Cruisers dont really seem to have any definitive strength, whether you're using them defensively or offensively. Personally I'd like to see them focus more on long-range weaponry and essentially function as larger, more expensive bombers that still retain some decent point defense against snub craft. Give them the artillery weapons, let them bombard battleships from long range, force the battleships to send in bombers to deal with them.
I am bomber-whore and I think the SNAC is a walking joke. Remove it and make normal torpedoes (not the type that even the RM turtle can evade). After you do that I am all up for Jinx first idea with the weak spots.
HOWEVER I don't think bombers should be much larger, some bombers will use their fire-capability and simply will shot a lot with less accuracy from far distance. And some bombers will be more maneuverable and will attack from closer range, less shots but far more accuracy.
Im quite sure that a Bretonian Gunboat with two forward guns would be a great bomber. And that was the role of gunboats in SP anyway, to bomb larger ships with their forward cannon(s).
All this damn whining about bombers, goodness me. They only work if you fly them properly and well. And even then, they're vulnerable. Bombers have been nerfed more times than it's worth counting so far.
4.83 dual nova launcher (when nova was energy gun)
4.84b1 supernova cannon replaces dual cannons, cant drain cruiser shields.
4.84 upgraded a bit so it can drain cruiser shields.
4.85 some bombers upsized, most slowed a little, bomber guns introduced

What you esssentially happen to be talking about is a submarine. Out of position, they'll get raped no matter how well protected they are, but they can deploy an ungodly amount of firepower. Right?
As for cruisers, they -do- focus on long range power. They dont do their job particularly quickly (unless its a siege) but they're good for it. Their one strength compared to bombers is that you need quite a few fighters to take them down, and they can reply with an instakill shot that doesn't take too much energy (double BR). I think their firepower needs a buff personally, as they don't really outlast anything... but there we go.

torps.and missiles taking shield damage on all types of ships, regardless of size.
total rebalancing of caps towards snubs...
WAIT FOR 4.86, THEN DISCUSS SNAC REMOVAL AFTER YOU HAVE TESTED NOVAS ON A CAP

Yes, yer right. Such battleships would have ungodly amount of firepower for those foolish enough to get close to them. With JInxs weak spots on the battleships, even close range combat wouldnt do really much damage unless you could properly aim, which in heat of battle and moving is not exactly easy thing to do. What stays at safe range, is safe. No big deal. Out of position, oh oh torpedo me.
Cruisers are meh. Their role is easily done by bombers / fighters / gunboats.
