there is no limit, but they're probably just asking for a huge amount so the trader won't pay and they can "legally" blow you up.
"To gain a hundred victories in a hundred battles is not the highest excellence;
to subjugate the enemy's army without doing battle is the highest of excellence."
yeah, very cheap play if they ask for ridiculous amounts, though 10 mil from an adv. train surrounded and assuredly doomed doesn't seem that off the wall to me....however 20 mil....geez thats just cheap PvP whoring right there

Have you found a secret trade route that makes it so that you carry cargo worth selling for more than 10 million? Its only an extra 500 tons.
Tax for passage at that level makes it totally unprofitable. Better to take the hit. Remember, we have insurance on that cargo, and in this game our escape pods always work.
Yeah 10 mil is too much, even with a rank of 91. If the guy just spent a week straight grinding cash to buy a BS for his approved faction, that doesn't mean pirates should expect to take a bigger chunk.
Look at his ship, look at his cargo, act accordingly. I've taxed as much as 4 mil and as little as 100 units of cargo he was carrying. I don't try to make a real profit off of my prey, that just makes them more likely to run and less likely to RP the encounter.

Hmm...text always destroys inflection..."not that off the wall"...i mean it is still ridiculous but sometimes a pirate will make ridiculous demands, within RP...
10 mil off of my trade runs is only about 1/3 reduction in profit for the whole run itself since i don't just go back and forth, i go in big ole circle routes.
and, this is just my opinion, but i feel the whole insurance bit is about the same RP as saying "this BS was a gift by the Rheinland Military." Insurance rates would rise everytime I was stupid enough to get my ship destroyed and eventually my premiums would be more than profits....corporations are worse than pirates...plus, my char doesn't trust the escape pod to survive so he avoids destruction if possible. (mind you this mentality is only in effect when the pirate is so kind to RP with me)
i ask for max 2 milions (when i meet large train with high level) and i know that the player has much more money,but why ask more? and when i meet little transport or freighter on low level,i ask from 100k-to 500k.
and thats because i will not kill all traders but tax then and give them protection when the trader pay.(i give protection in system where i tax the trader)
and in rp is for me much better ask for less money and have moeny as ask for 20 mil and kill trader.
i ask for 500k - getting a "tax" or a donation is a gesture - and by no means an income. if i tried to finance me completely by pirating, i d prolly ask for more, too - but all in all, pirating is more a negative deal, and an economic nightmare.
i experienced that there is a span that people pay - that is probably between 100k - 2million. 3 million is sometimes allready half of the profit of a whole flight, 10 million is completely rediculous ( sorry, but if anyone asked for 10 million, even an adv. train - i will full heatedly support any trader that refuses point blank ) . all in all, a pirate should not ask for more than 50% of the profit ( not the sell value ).
not sure if anyone really does NO missions at all, and a character only lives by his pirating - but i think most of the pirates at least do missions - and those add much more money than any pirating attempt. ( its roleplay - and basicly 100k is a lot of cash ( buys you a fully equipped civilian spacecraft ) - - i ask just enough so it doesn t really hurt the trader ( that is, unless he fires at me ) - ( and special tax demands for people that ooc stuff:laugh:)
