The best thing to do is to spend time on the server during your normal hours for playing, and pay attention to what clans are represented during those times. You should do this for at least several days to get a good sample.
Go to the factions thread that Epyon linked to in his post, and read up on the factions that interest you.
Then check out faction recruitment threads. Some only require you to show up and you'll get tens of millions of credits to outfit a heavy fighter, others (like my Lane Hackers) may require varying degrees of work to get you into a substantial combat vessel. It all depends on what kind of challenge you are looking for. You appear to be in GMT +1, and I can tell you that most of The Lane Hacker clan is in that time zone, so you ought to have several wingmen for Hacker operations...but The Lane Hackers make you do some work to get a PvP capable ship...we also teach you everything you need to know to be successful as a pirate, and we conduct PvP training as well.
Bottom line : you just have to do some research. Allowing yourself to be recruited by the first tempting offer that comes along is not in your best interests.

ok guys, this isn't the time to shamelessly plug the faction you belong to.... however the RoS....... nah only kidding.
I think that your best bet would be to get you character fairly neutral, perhaps set up a trader and just go round getting to know some of the actions and clans (make sure you do this in an rp way) and just find out where suits you best. Quite a lot of people play loads of different chars affiliated with a lot of different people. Join the faction that most grabs you after that. Personally I find myself drawn to the outcasts first i made my char have an outcast tag and ID then I got asked to join the RoS. the only way of finding you place in the game is to just to have a look at what there is.

The only excitement we get is picking the fleas off each other.
(Domesticated primates, you know...)
How's that for reverse psychology?

That's what always happens to Zoners... they hang out in systems with too much radiation and then they start spending too much time at the brothels on the monkey planet and BAM - fleas...
...so Srloc - if the thought of wasting time hanging out by freeports shooting the breeze with Zoners (while they pick fleas) sounds like a bore - then pick a pirate or military faction. I kind of enjoy sitting at Freeports picking fleas with the Zoners while watching all the tough-guys flying around prepping for combat raids.
There is a little of everything here in Disco. Fly around and talk with characters - and spend mucho time reading the forums and you will find a Disco family that fits your idea of fun!
...then stop by a freeport and chat with us flea-pickers!
anytime!
