I've insulted a couple of pirates after I'd gotten away (Firefly's are good at that, Trains are not), but this makes for a notoriety that I may not want. the BLS in particular comes to mind. I've gotten away from 3 of their pirates, and they're not all that bad, just I've been lucky. But when flying away saying "Better luck next time Pirate!" i'm asking to be blown to smitherines (sp?) without so much as a warning next time.
That's the RolePlaying I choose for my trader (gasp! an RP Trader!). I run the Sirius Loop, and run into a lot of pirates (and House Militaries) and RP each encounter...THATs the fun...not making a buck. My route takes me almost an hour to compete, and I only make 16-18m / circuit because of the cargo I carry, but it's RP, it's fun.
I haven't had the pleasure of trying to escape Archelon, but I hope to soon, should be an interesting encounter.
@ cmfalconer: If you ever get down toward Liberty, look me (Atalawohisdi) up. I fly this character almost exclusively. I have 4 others that get neglected. I do have one smuggler (Tohi Adedi) that flies the Firefly ... great fun flying that ship. All my characters are on the "unlawful" side so I have no conflict of interest in that regard. Plus it keeps me from getting confused as I RP.
Keep in mind folks, RP is as much about what we say in the chat window as it is flying and shooting. In fact, I'd say RP has a habit of ending as soon as the guns start blazing.
As to pirating near planets and bases. Hey ... part of the game. I don't sit there right next to the docking ring (cause I'd get smashed by NPCs). I'm usually about 2-3k away from the dock ring if I can get that close without getting killed. I basically get as close as I can without getting destroyed. Most times I can only get as close as 5-7k from the planet (Houston comes to mind). Pure hell trying to stay anywhere closer than that in Texas. This 5-7k gives the trader plenty of time to get the engines going and moving to the trade lane. He usually gets to the lane about the same time as I do (maybe sooner) ... so there is a chase and the trader has plenty of safety to move around.
Traders that move contraband (whether they have Trader ID or Smuggler ID) do not get attacked by me. I consider them supporting my cause. So if you traders are moving contraband, you might get an offer by me to support you get that stuff to a house base or planet. ;) I've done this before ... distracting the authorities while the trader/smuggler slips by unnoticed. Let the flames begin on that one.
RP is a complex thing. And Caylith has told me time and time again that she does not want to play the "RP police."
@ Spear: I'm hearing lots of calls for limiting pirate RP here and nothing for limiting trader RP (hehe ... trader RP ... oxymoron there). I call that pirate bashing. And it seems I'm the only one saying slow down and think about this. If we're not careful ... we'll see pirates getting sanctioned for being too close to planets, etc. And with that, you'll see a mass departure of pirate characters. Heck ... we are already disbanding the Nayehiya. And I'm considering throwing in the towel on piracy because of all this crap. So the traders will all cheer for joy when pirates are legislated out of business. All democracies are fragile ... if you're not looking ... what cannot be done in the voting booth will get done in the courts ... be careful not to legislate away your rights.
One thing that irritates me is factions receiving money from out of character transfers. I try to keep all my supplies in-character these days.
Pirates, after maybe sorting out the initial fighters, should be funded by theft or maybe, to a lesser extent, by properly aligned sympathisers. BAF shouldn't be funded by Kusari aligned traders. You get the drift, right?
Benitez has been, in the past, funded by my Trader tagged trader character. (Large train).
The clan is now funded (or attempting to be funded) by in-character smugglers...there is no need to stay out of character now with the availability of Pirate haulers, and lucrative smuggling runs.
@McNeo - Well, you should have a better comm inside your faction then.
Because, i have helped TBH against others a few times, before that incident.
And i even said that I am working only for the Corsairs.
Switching sides for that char would be impossible, because he has personal problems with Outcasts and Blood Dragons, and I have also said that.
Anyway, my point is, i could have passed trough Gamma with no problems, w/o saying a word.
But when I try to RP passing trough Gamma, i get denied, even though i'm friendly.
So i had to go all around.
Yes, i could have passed trough Gamma, w/o being caught, or anything.
But, if i get denied for a passage, i will always go around.
Because, in RP, there are lot of Corsairs that could punish me if i don't.
Anyway, that's past time.
I agree that pirates shouldn't be able to Pirate in front of Police Planets/Bases.
Because, if you have 2 Cruisers, 1 BS, 10 fighters (NPC's) there, and you try to tax a trader, instead of running for your life, that's silly.
Pirates should not fight in front of Police planets/bases too.
Because, in RP, they would be annihilated by so many ships.
And i'm not saying this because I fight pirates, but because i play pirates.
And i avoid as much as I can fighting in front of Police bases/planets.
Terrorists, however, should do that.
Their goal is to make damage to Planets/Bases, to kill people etc.
And they are much more Fatalists, then Pirates.

It is every Corsair's responsibility to die a beautiful death in defense of Crete, regardless of how OORP or how capwhoring the opposition is. Launch your fighter, joust the battlecruisers and die a beautiful death. Then, drink it down in the bar.
Do what you want, but there is nothing OORP with pirating in front of a planet or base. You wanna solve this ... make the NPCs tougher ... that goes for my Rogues as well. I'd like to see Rogue gunboat groups patrolling around our bases to keep the lawfuls at bay.
Interesting how traders that do not RP complain about how a pirate RP's.

But then thats just my view, I understand this may promote players hiding by their bases but then isn't it resonable to assume in RP that you should have resonable protection from a massive base in space capable of withstanding Battleship attacks.
It would force battles away from bases and piracy too as well as offer pirates protection near their base of operations.
Hold the phone! We agreed on something! I knew the time would come..
Yes stronger NPC and Base planet defenses are the solution, for lawfuls and unlawfuls.

Good point, and the easiest way to deal with this, just hack the lanes in these systems instead of venturing to the planets and heavily guarded bases. Play according to your faction's power and influence and if needed just play as the underdogs, retreat when heavily damaged and etc..
Piracy is already hardpressed, trying to banish them with furthermore strict limitations would not bode well for the balance, but they should play their roles accordingly and logically without harming the harmony of RP.
@ Spear: I don't think we disagree on much ... we just see the same thing from different angles. I just don't want us pirates to be singled out. Lets also remember the same would apply to lawfuls "leaving" the trade lanes. Why would police venture past the trade lanes or planets or bases? They wouldn't. So ... what about it? Are police factions willing to stay close to trade lanes and planets and bases? Are they willing to "avoid" open space? I can see the military factions venturing into open space, but not police.
@ Kress: Ok ... same would go for lawfuls flying around unlawful bases and avoiding unlawful systems. Why would a lawful character enter Humboldt, Puerto Rico, Cassini, Vespucci, etc etc etc? They should also avoid areas where pirates are known to be present ... those clouds, rocky areas and such off the beaten path. I mean ... why would a trader leave the trade lanes unless he was smuggling? RP anyone?
I'd love to see special patrols at bases/planets. They are key areas for whatever faction is in control of them. They should all be heavily protected.
Double, triple, quadruple everything. Guns, gun power, ships, armour, shields. Hell..make all base/planet patrol guard level ships...with out being guard faction. Let's see some NPC cruisers at bases/planets. Give all bases/planets base level turrets. aka bigger than BS's.
This to me would so improve a lot of issues folks are having. It would also change a lot of the game dynamics and make everyones npc faction status much more important.
