' Wrote:My friend in the marines actually heard a rumour where a decommissioned Challenger 2 was put on trial by taking some AT fire. Supposedly it took three Javelin shots to the before it finally got penetrated.
Not sure if its true, but the armour on that thing is seriously tough, hope it is true though.

What people need to differentiate between the M1, the M1A1, and the M1A2, in addition to the added bonus that the SEP and TUSK Kits offer.
For example, the M1 Abrams has a 105mm Royal Ordnance L7 cannon, it utilized Chobham Armor and it's infamous gas guzzling Jet engine.
The Army decided to slap the German Rheinmetall 120mm Cannon from the Leopard II on it, and then asked Lima to add in another layer of Chobham armor with a stainless steel shell surrounding a layer of Depleted Uranium, in addition to a NBC system several other non-descript improvements.
Then they made the M1A2, they stripped out everything in the tank until it was simply an empty hull, and then replaced the insides. The gun was still there, as was the engine. But everything else was entirely revamped and the system made highly effective. The Armor got buffed tremendously...
Let me also dismiss the "But the Abrams has a Smoothbore Cannon, like a Musket! The Challenger 2 has a rifled barrel, so it is more accurate!" habberdash that has been going around. The 120mm Rheinmetall fires APFSDS shells that accelerate at their target at Mach Igiss-Knows-What speed. The rifling of the barrel would be utterly ruined after, per se, three shots. So woop dee doo Challenger 2, you can deliver obsolete HEAT rounds at Tanks that have over 1400 RHA Equivalent against such, more accurately and watch them ask if somebody threw a rock at them.
Did I mention that if you do the math, if you loaded a gas guzzling Abrams and a Challenger 2 with the same amount of fuel, same type, and had them run at the top speed until they ran out of fuel, the Abrams would go farther and last longer?
Better yet, let's just take the RHA value against Kinetic Energy Penetrators, we have about 950 for the M1A2 SEP. By comparison the Challenger 2 is rated at about 800. The Javelin is also slated to provide penetration at around 500 RHA based off the original M1 Abrams at 400 RHA.
Even better, an Abrams got stuck in the mud! Yes, it happens to every tank, sadly we don't have gravity defying hover-boosters like the Challenger 2 here in the states. They tried to tow it out but were unable to, with Op Tempo calling for them to move forward, the Tank Platoon decided to have the crew hop in the back of a Transport and destroy the Abrams so that it would not "Fall into Enemy hands."
They fired 3, M829 APFSDS rounds at the tank in order to penetrate it and destroy it. Two of the rounds failed, the third finally penetrated and hit the ammo compartment at the back of the turret and exploded into a blaze of glory. Believing the tank was thoroughly annihilated, the Tank platoon moved forward and called for additional towing crews to arrive. Sometime later when they finally got the Tank out, they discovered that it was still able to be driven and that the turret and gun, albeit without ammo, still worked.
The Abrams is the Kalashnikov of Main Battle Tanks in rugged reliability, and the custom made .308 fiberglass stock hand-crafted Rifle of Main Battle Tanks in quality.
It fulfills the spot that the US Military needed it to fill, and fits in with the tactics and strategies that it was designed to work with.

When it comes to guns, anything by Kalashnikov, Browning or HK. The sort of thing that will not break from its intended use, especially the AK-47. As for tanks, I'm a fan of the Challenger II. I would otherwise go with the M1A2 Abrams, but the Challenger has built-in facilities for making tea. Planes? Well, that's easy. Eurofighter Typhoon for fighter, A-10 for close air support and Dakota/C-47 for just about anything else.
