Right, there's a lot of complaints about the current asteroid fields, and I think we have a good idea on how to solve the bulk of them:
1: Tiny roids like those in various dust fields -> Make them all dynamic, and lots of them. A ship should rightly be able to plow through spacedust and push all of it out of the way instead of getting hung up on a roid 1/1000th the size of the ship...
2: Static roids of various forms and sizes -> These need to be... bigger. A lot bigger.
I've seen an example of this in the asteroid field out in the Alberta system, and am impressed. Asteroids of that size are more easily navigable by capital ships (still have to go around them, but you won't get stuck between em as much - just slowed down), and easier on the server in terms of someone getting stuck and repeatedly colliding. They also feel more threatening. Basically, I want to end up redoing all the asteroid fields in the mod to that example.
To do this for 4.87, we'll need asteroid models. A lot of them. Textured, too. If anyone feels to help out creating a few, would welcome the help.
General idea: Try to keep them relatively simple in shape. An irregular circle consisting of a single group (to be exported as a 3DB) with a single texture. Keep the texture relatively small as well to help out folks with lower graphics. Shouldn't be too hard, roids are just chunks of rock or ice. If in doubt, reuse the existing roid textures.

I was going to do this for Neo Terra anyway and I've no gripes about sharing assets. What kind of poly count per roid are you looking at? Assuming they're upscaled significantly the density will be lowered, so yeah.
Edit: Whipped this up in a few short minutes in max, 320 polies.
I'm still looking for modelers on this. We need roids of various types: Ice (dirty and normal), rock (rusty, silvery, gold-y, hydrocarb dirtballs), and especially scrap.
Requirements:
Shape should be 150 to 500 on all dimensions.
Shape should be roughly convex. (the hitbox will only be the outer convex shell. Scrap may require an exception on this, but preferably not)
The model MUST be a .3db.
I'd also prefer to get a group of 4 or so different roids in the same style so the fields can be made to look more diverse.
Anyone up to the job?
[Edit] Cleaned thread. This is not for discussing this change to roidfields, this is a request for people to model new roids. Stay on topic;)
