Generally the concept is, noobs mine, and traders haul. (Trader with cargo 3500 or better)
I had done some very preliminary calculations indicating that 4 noob miners in CSV's (maybe) plus 1 or 2 traders hauling could form a mining team which could work.
I like this idea because it gives noobs a chance to make reasonable money "honestly", adds RP to the server (almost nobody mines right now) and could be a way to introduce noobs to the server, including factions, rules etc. Lots of time to chat with trader while mining.
In theory, any trader could go to NY, recruit some miners and go mine for a few hours. This I think would be pretty cool. The usual RP would come into play with pirates trying to steal proceeds, mercs/BH's protecting the operation, etc.
BUT, I did more research and calcs, and it looks like mining is pointless. The minable commodities are sold too cheaply. There is no way a mining team could make money anywhere near as well as trading.
SO, one solution would be to make minable commodities at least $1000 more expensive everywhere. That would not affect trading at all, since the "Buy" and "Sell" prices would both increase.
But, the extra $1000 per unit would become value added by the miners themselves. They could easily be paid $1 mill per hour.
Two questions:
1. Is there something I'm missing? Is there actually a way to make mining work already?
2. What about the abovementioned proposed commodity price increase? Would it screw something else up I'm not thinking about?
I know there are some of you out there that know more about mining than I do.
This is exactly the same thing i proposed a few times.
But, i was ignored.
Mining should be profitable, maybe not as trading, but at least useful.
So, i totally agree with you.
+1000 up the price for mined commodities (like Nioblium, Gold, Silver, Diamonds etc..). Both buy and sell.
So it doesn't affect traders, except that their cargo is worth much more.
So, it's more likely that they will pay the tax, instead of dying.
Which is anoter RP aspect this brings.
Idea is perfect.

I like the idea to be honest. And 1000 seems good.

It's true, indeed. I've always wanted to start a mining enterprise but never really got the opportunity; trading is just better. And I also think that we should make mining MORE profitable than trading. I mean, Trading is just moving goods. MINING is actually increasing the GDP, and putting more capitol into he system, yes?

Also - what will affect the competitivnes - opening new, valuable minerable fields in places, where bases don't sell them. See Omega 49 - it's closer to Dresden than tau-37 and it also has niobium mineable. I'd even go as far as removing minerals from bases - ya want them - go and shoot the pebbles!
Doom would like to make a large mining ship with almost no mobility, but with extreme cargo space to work as a storage between miners and traders.... A thing like that would be perfect... + Good fields like in Tau37, but without a base where you can buy the goods...

Yeah, Doom knows I support his idea. More ways of making money = complexity = more RP.
