I'd say yes, as long as it happens in Roleplay. And if the offender is actively sieging your base. Just make it clear that it's your base and that you're willing to protect it with all means.
It's disputed, they are currently not covered by the rules to do this, but on the other hand no sanctions have gone through regarding illegitimate engaging regarding player bases.
It seems like a pretty major rules issue to me, so I made a thread about it.
You could always set up a bounty on people attacking that base, though as its a blanket, youd need an official faction to sponsor it. Then your freelancers could defend it in the name of that bounty.

Since Freelancers are neither lawful or unlawful from a rule standpoint, and since it's left up to the individual's RP if he is lawful or unlawful, then I would say yes, you can shoot either lawful or unlawful players to defend your base.
It seems like something that would fall under the "if someone shoots you, you have every right to shoot back despite who it is" rule.
By the letter of their IDs, no, freelancers may NOT engage folk in defense of a base. The AI ID has the same problem. However, nobody has bothered to post any violation reports on this subject. The fact that you're neither lawful nor unlawful doesn't mean you can be lawful or unlawful at will, SMG - that's why the Freelancer ID doesn't permit a whole lot. If it did, noone would bother playing in an actual faction anymore.

I meant to say, the fact that you claim to be both lawful and unlawful means you will not be enjoying the perks of both, but rather the drawbacks of both instead. IE you can't be a pirate docking at every lawful base and claiming to be a civvy when the cops show up - to curb that kind of behavior, the Freelancer ID was limited to not allow piracy.
