It's not problematic just because it's high FPS... many games have absolutely no problem rendering at 200 fps or more, and will not lead to jittering. I'm pretty sure it's a problem with Freelancer's engine, at least that's what I recall hearing. The modding community can only do so much without the source code, and I imagine running the game at above ~180 fps leads to problems with the server keeping up. It's an old engine, after all.
For the reference, my game sometimes runs at 120 fps, sometimes at 60, and I have never had complaints voiced towards me about jittering, and I doubt the difference between 30, 60 and 120 is noticeable for anyone else other than yourself. Having more FPS than someone else is not cheating. But if what I heard/remember is correct, it's technical limitations at 180+ FPS that lead to problems usually not connected to FPS differences, in which case requiring players to stay below that limit would make sense.
As a side note, claiming that there's no noticeable difference between 60 FPS and above is not true. Yes, the refresh rate of your screen is capped at 60 (unless you have a 120 Hz monitor, I suppose). Higher FPS also means more updates in the engine per second, which can for example lead to more precise mouse input. Again, I don't know how the FL engine works, so perhaps it is an exception here. At least, it wouldn't surprise considering it starts acting up noticeably above 180 FPS.
As long as the frames per second don't reach 180, which makes the ship appear to jitter, while one can still aim properly, you're fine. If you it does, it falls under rule 2.1, exploiting game mechanics to be exact.
One can only proof it with clear video evidence, which makes it so hard to track, since people rarely run video capturing tools or care to upload it. Still, the admins punish those hard who get reported for. Like real hard.
However, there seems to be no option to restrict/cap the fps server-side. But only client-side with tools like dxtory.
Unfortunately, most people don't notice that they are "cheating".
Narc, i know you for some time and several others too here now. But 60 fps. Was max indeed. Now you are just pointing out That above a certain fps you cheat. As in a way you use other software to easy boost freelancer. There is no good or wrong with making it go higher then 60 fps. So all who has it higher then 60 are cheating. Might even generate in a way lags On the server by doing so.

Are you an admin? Can you say with 100% certainty that anything above 60FPS is cheating? I should be permabanned for having even 70FPS? Can you prove that FPS above 60 but lower than 180 affects anybody else besides me?
It's been discussed openly, there's been tutorials and help threads about it, so I am 100% sure admins are aware of the fact that a lot of people go above 60.
They should just make a hard ruling and say 120 fps is the limit, that way you are sure not to jitter. To me it would ideally be 60 fps, but there's no way to detect people with high fps when they don't jitter, so just be practical about it and set some arbitrary guaranteed* no jitter limit. I don't mind that some have twice the frames per second I have as long as they don't jitter - some have better mice, larger screens, better keyboards and so on too. No biggie, that's just the way competitive PC gaming is.
* When I tested it in conn some told me I was jittering when I was at 160 fps; so it seems like "below 180 fps" isn't enough.
Now.. want me to 'jitter' ? I could try this trick you all are talking about with my high end computer with dual graphic cards. Wonder how high it will go... Don't blame me if i would jitter then, but blame yourself not doing the same or not be able to do the same as your computer will not allow it.
So doesnt it prove already it IS cheating? Not only that it spoils the fun of others, but on your reactions i will try. gonna make some snub and pew.
Edit:
60 fps: i guess i will jitter against then
180 fps: i guess maybe not..
higher fps: i guess not neither.

When you say you are at 160fps, due it showing by something like, say fraps.
then it doesn't mean you are at that exact fps. It is always an average of what you actually have, even when its over a small period of time.
if you have it capped at say 170, it might and probably will touch 180 at times, even when the fps digit you have doesn't show it. Which means you have to cap it to something lower.
Ive also noticed a lot of people don't actually know how actual jitter looks like and they just start yelling around about it.
On a side note,
Devul , stop being sore about you sanction a while ago. Anything you say here or in other topics , related to unfair advantages or other similar things, makes you looks even worse.
so a word of advice, stop talking about anything related to possible unfair game.
